Of course I cannot guarantee you'll like it, but I highly
recommend a bass drum head from Evans called the Onyx
Emad
. If you like chest thumping puch even without a mic,
this is the head that'll do it. It's a bit expensive, about $60.00
but well worth it. I'm trying to get Billy to try one and my plan
is to even take one of my kicks with this head on it to one of
his performances just so he can hear and feel for himself.

I have it on a 16X22 drum of mine and it is totally like nothing I've
ever used before. This thing is the real deal! Sound, projection,
feel and response. And I have nothing inside this drum at all!

Check one out when you get the chance.

Are you still using the Kick port on the resonant head side with this particular head Don ?

The Kickport is on another kit with the regular Emad system, Ted.

I plan to install both the Kickport and Onyx head on at least a couple more
of my kits.

D.L.,

The Aquarian Super Kick used to be IT for me. I still have one on my Pearl
kit actually. But IMO, they don't hold water to the Onyx. As a matter of fact,
I like the entire E and G-mad systems much more. But the Onyx just blows me
away! You may feel differently of course, but my recommendation is high.

Hi Don -
I had the Evans EMAD clear batter on my 22x18 Yamaha maple Custom, and it sounded good, But always seemed to lack the real bottom end punch that I needed , with an adequate top end point to cut through. ( At least on that drum anyway)

But the funny thing is I had a front head made by a company called Drum Art, and when I got it and put it on, my kick drum just became a total monster--At that particular time I had the Super Kick 1 on. Since then, I've just left it on there because I'm completely satisfied with the sound. The Drum Art heads are thicker because of the treatment and coating to make a custom logo..

But I am curious to see what the Onynx does with this front head.

I always end up splitting the plastic ring on the edges of the EMADs where it holds the foam in place...Don't know why that is...I know it's not a tuning issue because I'm a real stickler with my tones. I do have a real heavy foot, particularly when I'm hittin my ''ones''.. --D.L.

D.L.,

I find that the capabilities of the emad system is maximized when
the entire package is in play. That is, both the batter head and
the resonant head that goes with it.

You splitting the plastic foam ring holder is scary! You must be taking
steriod injections in your legs or something!!! Shocked affraid affraid affraid
You got me there, bud... I'm stumped on that one. scratch

I played Onyx heads at my church on the toms and I did not like them it be the way the current drummer tuned them. I did not like the feel, but hearing him play them while I was off in the distance they sounded great.
