We talk all the technique, we play all the equipment, we talk shop on how to do this and how to do that.... At the end of the day, music should just be fun and make you happy.

You must have a pipeline to my present reality, Don . . . the most recent tune I've been singing on guitar is Fats:

That's a rockin' live version. And I just took the movie Ray with Jamie Foxx out from the library. Might watch it tonight for the first time.

I've seen Fats and Jerry Lee live, but never Ray. Played with someone who was in Ray's sax section though!

OK, but it's THAT fun? If it is, for whom?

Best regards!

Hi Alex,

Yeah... I think I see your point. My response before I get Slammed is it should be "fun" for those on both sides of the stage! I don't know about you, but sometimes I find myself (and others) getting caught up in the technicalities of performance rather than their simple pleasures. Thankfully, this doesn't happen as often for me as it used to: namely:

  • When I go to see someone play these days, I'm more interested in the getting inside of their musical heads, so to speak and enjoy the offering.

  • When I find myself playing these days (live), I'm more interested in congealing with everyone else on stage so that the offering sounds like a total unit and the music makes sense. Of course, there are moments where I'm assertive expressing my own percussive personality (and having fun doing so).

  • When I find myself recording these days, I try to strike the balance between the two since what is recorded will last forever (so to speak) rather than the fleeting moments of a live performance, unless recorded itself.

Yeah, I see your point (I hope). Afterall, we all tend to talk shop in forums such as this. Heck, I try to even have fun here too! (if you know what I mean!) It's nice for me to make the distinctions, which are not always clear all the time. LOL! clown

Woofus, I hope you'll enjoy the movie RAY. J.Foxx did an excellent job I think portraying the legend (as also his peers thought when he won an Oscar for the role). As for your having played with with a former band member of Ray Charles (sax), that must have been a gas. When I was with Hathaway, there were a number of venues where Ray C. was on the bill among a calvalcade of artists. I remember one sound check in Atlanta where he was a task master with the audio crew. But when his part of the show started, it was like all of the four letter words coming from his mouth never happened. As Colin would say, the show was "blissful." I was privileged to be among the performers and don't take it for granted, especially today. Like a Star @ heaven

Nephew D., Nice post: reminding us that at the end of the day, if we didn't have fun, then what's the point? Lots of thought on this subject when making money at it becomes less important than the artistic possibilities. Don't get me wrong though (MAKE THE MONEY) if it's there to be made. Otherwise, just play your heart out! Cool

Alex,

The above response by John is exactly as it should be. Music should be fun for everyone involved! I figured those of you with the years of experience would know this already... Then again, maybe you don't agree with my comments, which is perfectly fine also. If you are referring directly to the clip, all you need do is look at the performers and those they were performing for to get your answer.

As for myself, should the time come when doing this is no longer fun for me or my audience, that's the time I'll hang up my sticks.

Best, Regards.

Oh, it seems that I was misunderstood, perhaps is my very bad English, perhaps because my entry that was so brief.

First of all, I would not like to offend anyone, you are all fine people.

Normally when I see messages that I don't agree (pretty often) I don't post anything, but this time I thought I reply something.

I meant to say that the music these guys on the video you posted played is not any fun at all to listen TO ME.

I would, on top, feel very bad to play such kind of music (again, it's not the first time I think like this about something posted), but what "touched" me was that there was an implication like saying: "ALL MUSICIANS HAVE FUN DOING THIS..." (maybe it was not what you intended, of course) and I just didn't want to be part of it.

"For fun" I basically enjoy the same music I play or stuff related in some way, not other stuff.

Guys I want also you to know that I really don't care if you like blues and rock and roll, it's a free world, and it's OK to me. I just, THIS TIME, didn't want (somehow with my silence) agree or be part of it. ACTUALLY IS NO BIG DEAL.

Of course music should be fun, I think we all agree, it's just that what these guys do is hardly fun to me.

Just for the record, I'm not the kind of guy who complains about the media, etc....I don't have the time and don't want to listen music I DON'T LIKE. I have a radio in the car but never turned it on...always I play the music I bring to listen. So I never complain, why would I complain? I don't know about any subject so I don't expect other people to know about music.

Why I should care if people don't know, say, who is Coltrane if I can't even name one contemporary matematician (or replace with any cientific profession you like) from any country, but it sort of bother me the implication of the thread and I open my big mouth this time... Laughing

In any case it's very hard to me to express properly about what I think.

I wish you all fun!

Alex,

None of us are from the same mold... What's good for the goose is not necessarily good for the gander... That's a given and everyone knows that (so I thought). I'm sure the people that attended that particular show had some understanding of how they were going to be entertained. And judging by the clip, they enjoyed it and had fun with the show. Those whom did not enjoy themselves, their task is to find a form of musical entertainment that they do enjoy, yes?

I personally enjoyed the clip and the music... If you didn't, there's nothing wrong with that. One man's garbage is another man's treasure, and vice versa... The point and my only "implication" is that whatever music you do like to play and listen to should be a fun, enjoyable experience for you and the folks you perform it for...

Would you agree with that?

Rhetorical question..... Of course you would. Wink

Don.
