Came across this article today about Boomer endorsing the new Porter and Davies Tactile Monitoring System. Well , I had no idea what that was so I did some investigating.

Seems that there is a connection from your bass drum thru this module, which is then connected to the drum throne. What happens is that the bass drum vibrations are transmitted into the seat of the throne and thus, your posterior. It's adjustable because the intention is not to hurt, but rather give you a better feel for what you are doing with your bass drum.

Boomer, I was wondering if you could elaborate a bit more on your experience with this unit, and why do you feel the need to use it at all ? And since you generally use a double bass, do you have two units connected ?

Anyone else using this item ? thoughts ?

Here's the article I saw:

Porter & Davies are delighted to announce that Billy Cobham and Benny Greb are the latest drum artists to become Ambassadors for P&D tactile monitoring systems.

They join a fast growing roster of international drummers who include the BC2 or Gigster as an integral part of their kits for live and studio playing.

The BC2 and Gigster deliver focused sensitivity, accuracy, power and portability and are highly regarded by many of their international drum artists such as JR Robinson, Gavin Harrison, Anton Fig, Daniel Adair and Gerald Heyward.

The monitoring systems will be featured at NAMM 2012 in Los Angeles at Hall D, Booth #2879 where Porter & Davies themselves will be demonstrating the benefits and introduce the system to international drummers, distributors and retailers at the show.

I've seen bass players use something similar to this to supplement their in ears.

Something else has been out for awhile with this idea. I forget the name of it. I think it was associated with edrums, though. I may be wrong.

You get the idea this is some kind of TENS unit for drummers.

This system has been around for a long time, Ted.
Remember "Jazzman" from back in the day on the
old BC forum?! He first told me about this way back
then. I think some company made a unit called "The
Thumper" or something or other....

I remember as well reading about a similar product some years ago. I couldn't imagine having such a unit though - but that's just me.

Oh, let me take that back... I suppose in large venues it might come in handy when the monitor mix might skew certain frequencies more toward the audience than the drummer. I guess it depends on how much overhead is available before saturating the channel.

Sounds cool though. I'm sure it feels even better! bounce

So what's the purpose ? To feel the bass drum vibrations in your butt ? Is that supposed to aid your hearing of the drum ? Or is it supposed to replace a monitoring system ? Anybody here ever used one ?

Peace,

I've never used one Cousin, but there must be a customer base for it given the cost of developing and manufacturing this device.

However, and this is just my uninformed opinion, that it probably provides the benefit of feeling the kick in addition to the monitoring system.

Personally, I wouldn't want anything next to my butt other than the stool (drum stool that is affraid ) and my pants, etc.

lol!
