Here's an interesting project Dave Weckl and
keyboardist, Jay Olliver have in the works.

I saw this a couple weeks ago or so. Kind of like Kickstarter. Wonderful way to fund projects.

The record company thing is a moot deal
for many of these artists as they want
the publishing rights to the material they
create. This is very prevalent in the
Jazz community and these artists must
come up with creative ways to fund these
very expensive projects... This has got to
be a massive undertaking and I really don't
see a substantial amount of sales here. Not
because of what they're asking but just
because of the genra and the numbers that go
with it... I hope they proove me wrong. I wish
them all the best of success.

This is kind of embarrassing begging for money like that, a guy of Weckl's stature should
not be doing this.

What happened to Stretch Records, doesn't Chick want any music from Dave anymore?
What are you donating to, Weckl and Oliver both own their own studios...CD duplication?

That makes me feel a bit uncomfortable when donations are needed to make a CD,
it is almost like playing on a street corner with a cup in your hand.

Weckl is a top notch pro that has been in the business for almost 30 years,
this just seems a bit corny and lame, in my opinion.

I guess they're looking to off set some of the cost,
drumman. As you know these guys aren't pop stars
and they have to pracitically kill themselves gigging
250 days and above out of the year just to make a
decent living. It's not easy. There are no financial
laurals to rest on.... Work, work, work. Go, go, go.

They can easily record in-house. It's the distribution companies they have to pay the bucks to. Unless they just sell it on their own - CD Baby, Amazon, whatever. Someone of Weckl's stature could probably sell well like that, but if he wants it in stores, advertised in publications, etc. he needs distribution.

I actually think the idea is great because it keeps you in control of all the money, and no waste for expensive record company exec salaries.
