In the essence of learning - why is that particular 3 stroke pattern not a triplet? Must the accent always be on the first stroke?

Yes, in essence, it is a triplet pattern played in four.
Not THE standard way but it is a triplet.

well, it's actually 2 sixteenth notes and an 8th note.

what he's playing is like *A* here:

And what he wanted to play is *C*:

Just because its three beats per quarter note doesn't make it a triplet yet. Shocked

Hm. Wait. Is a triplet meant to be a waltz-thing - ONE two three, ONE two three ...

But ... the Elvin, Bonham, Brewer, etc., rack/floor/kick pattern everybody and their brother plays in one way or another is not a triplet?

It's a triplet in that it's a 3 beat pattern. It's just not the straight
even triplet that everyone's used to hearing. He's using 2 16th notes
and an 8th and thats what gives it that galloping feel. But it's a triplet
pattern nonetheless.

What is a straight even triplet people are used to hearing? Are you speaking of the jazz ride pattern?

123/123/123/123/123/123/123.... Just straight triplets,
no rests, waltz time with the first beat of each triplet
being accented.
