a new band I've been playing parties and clubs with a little. We miss the rest of our horn section but have been playing as a 5 piece for fun and tightening. So now we can bring some players in to take solos and add those harmonized JB horn jabs etc... i can see some weaknesses to work on how to have more dynamics, interest, vocals need some work, People dance and have fun so...
we're working on lots of new stuff mostly original, all the time. we just really enjoy playing together so try to imagine trumpets and saxes soloing we are a guitar free band other than bass and that has been a policy just to have a different sound from every other band in town. i'll post other styles and tunes we do when they come in.

they are ddrums. they belonged to the other band's drummer my buddy, so he offered to let me take them for a spin. Funny thing was he didn't use the toms for his set!. he's like you want me to put the toms on for you. I used my pacific snare though his wasn't to good. I liked having the timbale on the right i need to get that in my act! (that was great spellcheck wanted to change timbale into timetable) timetable!! that's a great name for a tune)
anyway i digress,
that short sampling of tunes you just put up is our concoction of an Indian tihai (that beginning riff that happens 3 times) in a row and some simple changes to solo over. then a well known west African 12/8 groove called sorsenette is the basis of the second half of the piece with it's break, groove. and simple melody comes from the balaphon.

I have been experimenting with this instrument with the group which i am eager to post when i get a hold of some footage. a 13 string kamale ngoni (man's ngoni created in the 60's for pop music )seen here by this master. Related to the more ancient donso ngoni (hunter's harp) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4fbdVUzdRE&list=PL6EADF99F9D3724B1

Yes, I have a kit like that, kenny. Only I later ordered an 8" tom
and then found a bare 10" ddrum shell on ebay that I painted and
then added hardware to match what I already had. The set came
with 12" rac and two floors and a 13X6" snare. I don't know what was
wrong with this guy's snare but the one I have sounds killer. The drums
are the "Dominion" Maple series and the kit sounds as awesome as any
great sounding kit I've ever heard at any price and I paid $800.00 for the
initial 5 pc. setup.

It's cased up right now but the next time I set it up I'll take some pics
and post them. The color is called "Snow".

I really enjoyed the Indian tihai piece. The "funk" thing had some interesting
moments but seemed to lack any bite and the girl singing didn't help things. I
thought you played some interesting patterns and fills. Very clean, and I liked
your use of dynamics. Those playing with you don't seem to be cut for that kind
of music, however... Great clip of the ngoni, also.

Looking forward to hearing more.... Keep em comin!

Thanks Don,
I liked playing that kit. The snare had a beat up head and was not tuned well, all muffley and messed up sounding. I just grabbed mine. It may not have been a match to the kit it seemed small, gutless and sounded dead. I thought i might break the head. It's funny that drummer won't use his toms he's a bit of a novice and his own fills still mess him up. I told the sound people my sound has toms turn up the drums! The bass drum was awesome!

Our bass player is actually a great jazz keyboardist. I wanted him to do that but he loves to groove on bass and solos pretty well. He teaches jazz. We figure leave him on bass and get some more horns and we'll be fine. He picks things up so fast and knows theory so well. I like working with these kinds of college educated jazz kids. Not really a funk player but I'll work on him. He's very solid and remembers arrangements really well. But it's true we could've taken it over the top more. If we had our bari player it would come off much more powerfully. I'll hopefully have more videos of that weekend's shows and post them to show some strengths we have. We have this med/fast 7 that I solo on that was kind of nice.

Looking forward to hearing what you have, Kenny.
I'll be trying my hand at some music minus one's
that I have in the next week or two... Let's see
how those come out.

This is the beauty of this particular forum and that is we've been together, along with papa Pete, well over 5-6 years and have establish a kind of relationship that is not common in a cyberspace environment. It's incredible how we can actual read the truth about ourselves even when we "appear' to be somewhat antagonistic with each other....having fun. That's how much we are family here that we really do have a relationship that's real, in spite of being online.

I love you guys,....more you D than Kenny....Again, just joking Kenny sunny
