Right off the bat, I must
say that the essentials
seem to be addressed in
this design. I would like to
try it sometime.

The one thing that makes
me shiver, though, is what
happens if a piston goes
bad on the gig?

Thanks, Woody!

Just saw this post doing a search. Went to the site. Interesting idea, but like Pete says, it's still a system depending on mechanical parts for it's function. Still, it's an intriguing idea, and one would hope the guy has a good understanding of the mechanics and lifetime of the pump. Nice to see another American made devise. I see nothing about it anywhere on the web, as far as people using it, aside from one review. The guy gave it a good review.

Looks very interesting. I wonder if it or another pedal would solve my current problem: when I switch from bass drum pedal (Axis longboard) to my timpani floor tom, then go back to the bass drum, the pedal is still flopping around, so I can't get hold of it. Maybe it's time to use a heavy spring, though I really don't want to . . .

Here are some photos of the timp tom I'm using, though mine is natural finish.

Some 1968 video of Bilham using a timp tom:

Max Roach used one in later years on the duo Friendship record with Clark Terry:

Here I am using it on my only recorded extended drum solo with a band:

I bought the drum in Pete's hometown of Evanston around 1983, stopped using it for a long while, but recently re-added it to my kit. Someone should design a way for people to convert their floor toms to make these things . . . they're a lot of fun, but can be overused/abused.

Splendid! Wow, man, you guys are good.

Really nice kit sound. I love that ride. The solo was cool, too.

You mean your Axis is still rocking back and forth when you come back to it? You'll have to figure a way to stop it as you switch over. Wouldn't take much. Just a mental note to hold still for a nanosecond would stop it from rocking.

Are the rest of those songs on the Jazz Stream album?

Thanks so much, Asaph, you made my day. Yes, the pedal is still rocking back and forth when I come back to it. I'll try the "mental note" strategy, thanks, but my gut tells me that's gonna be very difficult. And, no, the other songs on that page are from my rock band experience. There isn't really a Jazz Stream cd, at least not one ever professionally made . . . but I have enough stuff recorded for the Smithsonian.

Maybe if I just tighten-up the existing spring it won't rock so much . . . it's just too loose right now in general, I think.

If you tighten the spring it may rock more. Right now the beater weight is yanking it back and forth with a loose spring. If you tighten the spring both beater and spring tension will pull things back and forth more.

I guess it would be a timing issue in your head to stop the pedal before you switch to the other one. Once you practice it awhile it will become memory and you'll do it automatically.
