One of my all-time performer, Harvey Mason. There's just something about his playing that always captivates my attention. It started back in the late 70s and still does it to me till now. They're this intricacy that lay just where they need to be along with a tonal quality and dynamical push that characterizes Mason's zone.

I totally agree, Rac. Two words have
always come to mind for me when describing
H.M.: 'THE TOUCH.' He has a way of touching
the drums that just makes everything work all
the time.

Aggressive and non aggressive, Loud and soft,
hard and easy... Harvey Mason has a way of
making each of these elements work simultaneously
while delivering a constant state of enhancement to
the music as a whole.

A true master.

Yes D it's that, as you put it, Touch of the drums. It's something I'm going  for as part of my playing. Thanks for pointing that out.

Here is Harvey Mason going into a very subtle and intricate solo.  The kind of solo that sets it apart from wam-bang-playing that's out there now. So so much to learn from Mason's approach to playing as far as my thinking goes. As D mentioned it's his touch or in other words its the mason's zone!

I must say, Rac that for that last clip
it was surely vintage Harvey Mason
though I would have like to have heard
more snare snap with a bit more pocket.

Lots of tom work and snares thrown off
which for me calmed the tune down more
than I liked, personally.

Still masterful playing by Mr. Mason.
Always a pleasure.
