Here's a sketch of a tune I've mentioned wanting Don to funkify. Please pardon the guitar playing, singing and drumming. No excuses for the composition. Planning to add a verse and some instrumentation.

I've put it on Slam's myspace page for his consideration:

LOL......Keith.

I hate liver. As a matter of fact when I got my deer this year the only thing I didn't take from him was him LIVER.
I left it in the woods for the coyotes to eat.

Tell me this...... were you playing the drums with your fingers???
It sure sounded like you were playing the snare drum with the snares off with your fingers.

Glad you're laughing! The snares are off and I'm using a piece of bamboo found locally. There's a hotrod in my right. Thinking of turning on the snare and using a stick for the remainder of the song yet to be recorded. Hoping to put it into overdrive.

It's a song written circa 1994, but recorded last month. Took new inspiration from the African rhythm "Kuku" found here:
http://tontinkan.net/en/rhythm8.htm

Strange I'm singing about Eva Braun and Ted just posted the Hitler video on the other side . . . I'll bet you have your own bomb shelter, Woody, stocked with your own canned goods . . .

No, I'm not a survivalist, Keith, but I do have a pantry full of home made canned goods.

Laughing Laughing That's really something, Woof! It sounds so much like you, considering what I know about you via that forum - especially your humor! Authentic stuff. And I like the constant snare sound. Cool!

I hate liver too, btw! Shocked

Kind of you to even listen, Niki. Though I'm not necessarily all that proud of the work, I do think there's a chance of it becoming an underground hit in the dance clubs and/or delicatessens of Africa, perhaps especially the French speaking nations. If I could be so lucky!

Take good care of yourself, Niki, and have a beautiful, restful break.

Okay?! Let’s see whose “liver” we’re talkin’ bout and from what “ani-MAL!? I don’t like Liver – I Love It. In fact so much that I morphed several clip file graphics 15 years ago with this theme. Yes, I still have them since “Spirit” was my original moniker with the computer game “Descent” back then, as well as when first signing onto Boomer’s forum in the Fall of 2002. Check them out:

Liver: one freaky tune Tiff0
Unless you have TIFF capabilities in your arsenal, you will not be able to resolve this link. Sorry.

Liver: one freaky tune L2

Liver: one freaky tune Spirit0

We’re not finished yet Woofman: there’s the variety that is eaten raw by such culinary quirks as Anthony Bourdain and Andrew Zimmern who ingest it raw right out their quarry. I frankly don’t see myself eating raw liver from any quarry in ANY cuisine (I like Bourdain’s and Zimmern’s show though: “No Reservations” and “Weird Eats,” respectively on the Travel Channel). I like chopped liver when served as a kind of pate; but I’ve eaten the buttery French version as well (fois gras). Yum, yum; for real! Growing up in NYC, I acquired a taste for “chopped liver” as prepared by the Jewish community. And you know why. It tastes good. Bring on the Hellman’s though and two slices of bread! LOL!

But with chicken and beef liver, it must be prepared and served with ONIONS and gravy. The starch would be either smashed potatoes or white rice; the greens could be anything that doesn’t overwhelm the “stinkiness” of the liver though (e.g. no collards – kale would be better to my tastes).

But somehow Woofus, knowing you, your use of “liver” in this song suggests something else; particularly when hearing your vocals and instrumentation so far. I’ll leave that for you to explain. What was your motivation when doing this? That might give us a clue.

As for the “funkifying” of this tune, it would require a tempo change among other production values, just for a start. I’ll leave the beats per minute analysis out, since often with Funk the groove and lyrics (if any refrains) work together in a bouncy/danceable fashion. I remember seeing this post last year; just didn’t have the opportunity to really study it. Whatever anyone can do with it remains to be seen/heard. Actually, if the tempo remains the same for the lyrical impact, you might find it sounding like an “ethnic David Bowie.” Lot’s of possibilities there, but you’ll have to investigate them – particularly when it comes to “delicatessens” in Africa! LOL! What are you thinking about???

I almost wish Musiko/Kenny was able to listen to this. He might give you better tips: but then you did think about morphing this into “funk.” Possible… anything is possible! That’s the beauty of our art form.

Glad to hear from you today. afro

Love the graphics, Suss. And you're right about tempo change to funkify. I've been very tempted to start over and slow it down . . .

My motivation was probably just borne of play on words, double entendre . . . lately I've come to appreciate even more what I've always liked: finding connection and juxtaposition. SO much great art comes from it, including comedy. Was watching Monty Python the other day; such brilliant absurdities and downright meaningful contrasts. Glad you caught the delicatessen line, perhaps my favorite bit of humor I've ever come up with here in Bilham.

Don, I know it would be embarrassing for you to sing this song, but I was serious about you having the ability to nail it in funk, though I really think slowwww and scary is the ticket here . . . the way I have it now does bounce in a more dance-africa way . . . I'll probably finish it and move on, then come back to it for a re-work.

Thanks for listening, Suss, and keep enjoying that taurine-soaked liver . . . keeps your nervous system healthy.

Absolutely Woof! It's even more beneficial for the Blood without gutting it! Razz

Hey Ted, Woofus, et. al: if you don't like Liver, then why eat the meat? The organs are vital, not the flesh!??? But then remember that there are vegetarions too. Whoops! There it is!!! Just apply this to our Music while embracing those who remain alienated in a global society! You must do this by your own convictions once proven - then, and only then, will your impact be evident and acknowledged among the Living in the most hidden spaces. alien

Don will have to first understand juxtapositions and absurdities within unique and personable performances. Give him and us time. One of the most important principles in percussion I've learned is to appreciate the spaces between strokes. Those spaces are motivating with time to breath.

As to "double entendre?" This defines a figure of speech in which a spoken phrase can be understood in either of two ways. It comes back to the truth of relationship (in the purest intent and personally: whether musical or otherwise); namely that our individual perspectives wind up being in either opposition or agreement. Yet I am not one who adopts many roads to the same Results. My only father in skin (now passed), and my Father without (now Ever present) are now all knowing (omniscient) with the brief span of time offering it to me or anyone within our spans of life. After all of the frik and frak over millenia, should not we know BETTER?

... oh, I forgot: there are some with hardended hearts out here in cyberspace that are seeking a home among the folks BEFORE pressing the 101 keyboard Enter key. Hmmm...

This is why I cannot withhold what I know by relationship and not by a computer/geek mentality. You already know this Keith - which is why after many months of reaching out to you, you finally phoned me. There is only One! Yeah... we're both reminded on that One, aren't we(?). I publicly have broken the generational curse upon myself as so many ought to on their own millenia ago. Seek your own coach, mentor or seer on this score of music. If you refuse to find this person, then open your box and think In The Name of Christ, By His Father's Name: beyond the walls that you have put yourself in by yourself.

Here I make it plain: the organ "liver" cleanses the blood. Do

Too many don't know who our Father is, beyond the semen begetting our sentient existence.

My plea is for peace and understanding from the Genesis to the genders. The best way to get out of hole is STOP DIGGING IT.

My greater plea is for both students and teachers to be in the room.

My existence is temporary. But by my testimonies over the last 30 years speaks for itself. I am not over yet. Nor are you. I am a man waiting upon his Love of life. Candi abandoned me because of her children (FIVE) whom I assisted to raise and house while finding myself homeless some years later in the wake (2008). Candi was not unequally yoked to me. She and I accomplished so much together over a twenty year period. Yet I loved her (perhaps, in honesty, I stll do). And in July of 1998, she walked out of my life simply because she could after I personally negotiated the best contract she ever experienced in her career.

Candi Staton is not the BEST vocalist: she is a stylist, as I am on the drums. Together we made music in public performances and in arenas most dream of. Yet after 20 years of my life, I found myself in a hospital with an anxiety attack where no medical practioner could diagnose anything wrong with me. Yet I could not physically breath when reclining myself on my pillow with her not by my side and the morning Sun. The onslauaht was in July, 1998: the symptoms came in October of that year. I knew what it was: the abscence of my soul mate. Yet I've grown within myself since then to realize that all of us are temporary unless we yield to a greater purpose and mission in life. My only embarrasment in life is to have succumbed in my weakness while so many have yet to succumb in humility.

So... I pick myself up by my own bootstraps and level my person for living. So many private-sector businesses where I discovered what I already knew have yet to learn beyond the mammon. The only problem is that the detractors will already be there. So with courage, I pull up my SOCKS within the bootstraps and walk with dignity. This takes focus and integrity: it is very persistent and what will be known eventually as Sussewellian.

http://www.johnsussewell.com/2Reconcile.mp3

Eventually I sought refuse in another that was unfortuantely unequally yolked to me due to our many issues. I speak and write for the benefit of everyone, while balancing my own survival. Do not take advantage of it: since you Cannot either logistically or legally mitigate. Check the date and time stamp in the meantime and make the determinations for yourself.

My Love is to those who know me personally. For those who do not: then don't. Though via the Internet, we have much to Learn when being Students, the Teacher has long since fled the room when no students are there.

My greatest desire in life is to reconcile our differences. Not because of slamming or shushing, but because of what is more important: Reconciliation/Atonement/Redemption/Forgiveness/Imperfection:

Just do what is your mind, hands and feet to do drummers. We are the timekeepers.

Happy Valentines Day without confusion from a man to his many brothers.

Well, that response slowed me down. I'm gonna let it sink in a while, then start over on this production . . . I can only compromise so much on this muddy, upstream journey and this tune's just gotta slow down to get really dirty. I'm gonna let it breathe, finally.

Here we are, between breaths; the inhalation's near.

I'll continue with the 5- string ax since the high E snapped, a Keith Richards-style blessing in disguise, though he removes the low E.

Okay Woofus... that's cool too.

When I originally thought you were speaking about funkifying the Liver, now you're speaking about a "sliver"guitar string and instrumentation. I know only a little about the guitar but enough to say that if your high "E" snaps, then settle into the Low "E" register. Think bass "four" string with reference to "Liver." That's the beginning, with drums, and how to funkify this tune. Just a hint... from a musical perspective and LIVE experience among players since funk was born. I was playing and performing well before funk as commonly known. I love the groove and often love the lyrics from a danceable point of view. Yet you have adapted this idiom in your motivations to present a fresh idea on the whole concept. I applaud you in that. I played funk before it became funk. Forget about the industry politics and timings. Record Labels then controlled what would be released for the marketplace. The rest of us back then had to have "day jobs" while proving our mettle. Somehow I was Blessed (berachah/baruch). Actually I personally know who Blessed me and anyone desiring to tap into the Well (certainly no pun nor insinuation intended from me - tap into an know Him for yourself).

Keith... and here I also thought your were talkin' 'bout drumming instead of the tune (Liver) itself. If you want me to produce it, then I'll have to play on it, while you work out the axes: I use onions and gravy with rice to provide the down home cooked flava dude. You'll make more money on the songwriter credits than any producer should make on the production. But then, even there you'll have to do your research. Is this too complicated right now? Oh... let me lighten the load. This is a true testimony from me now and a real life experience 15 hours ago by this date and timestamp locally from me.

Ironically, I was in a musical discussion yesterday with some coworkers who merely pick at their axes instead of seriously performing them with purpose. They share that music is a pastime with them. Yet they cannot bridge the gap between being "skillful" on their instrument of choice when challenged with economic realities. Having distributed a DVD of stuff from Suss several months ago, they are beginning to see the difference. Yet among coworkers, it takes time and patience. This is an especially important point since those among whom I work, and rely upon me, simply suss me out in areas that once again I am both grateful and humbled. OH... forget my gibber... here's what I wanted to say while sharing in the process:

One man (amateur guitarist/coworker asked among a group of idle listeners):

What do you get when you play a Blues record backwards?
[...after the usual jocular jousting with all of the imagined characterisations (and me wondering), he said:]
You get back everything the lyrics say you lost!
Selah Keith.

While laughing, I immediately understood the intent from some who aspire to Life rather than levity. We do so with whatever is in our caring hands to accomplish and "lighten" the mood - when in the environment for everyone to breath. My object lesson out this experience is to encourage those who thrive on controversy to think thrice (i.e. three times among cultural vernacular and understanding). Get out of the Box and Go Somewhere out of this country. If I've got to go to the "Hood," then there is nothing in my vocabulary to communicate with the present Y Gen unless we ALL are willing to listen from a caring heart. I have no idea what the next generation will be dubbed. All I can do in this present one is accept the fact I I'm a baby boomer! bounce Laughing EVERY PUN INTENDED! Think long - think wrong is my manra. [I'm not sorry Billy for the semblance- however unintended on my part]

Whew! So...

Think backwards Woof and break the Glass once again (oh, I meant Class once again beyond the brittle and fractured friendships so many experience these days (daze) yet have too much PRIDE to admit). Maybe more should follow in this mindset that I offer; it is a lot safer there: as much as for your personal health as for your well being among others yet to meet down the road.

Pet Chispa for me while hugging Keil in the regression of parenting this young man. Do this Keith - for humanities sake. You have no idea what your seed and care has produced along with your wife and his mother. I hope to meet him at some point and even simply play along with you toward humanity's growth. Shalom Sir!

With Respect,
