I've been doing a lot of studying lately in terms of just listening to different music and how it's put together by way of the musicians used and the ambience of the recordings themselves. In this process and as a drummer I have found myself really keying in on Lenny Whites work.
His ability to produce a song with just the right ingredient and the amount thereof has really impressed me. everything seems to fit in such a way that your ear is not pulled one way or another. when he uses a vocalist, it's the right person for the song. Nothing is out of balance or out of place. It all works, right down to the way his drums are tuned and recorded.
Yet there seems to be a kind of free flowing 'freeness' to what he does without the music being sticky and stiff. Then and most importantly, his productions come off as musically uniform... Music is made!
I would urge you to go here and listen to these tunes in their entirety if you haven't already.
