The Donny Hathaway Newport Jazz Carnegie Hall concert:

First thing I noticed was how bad the mix is compared to the Warner release which Suss shares on his site (Nu-Po a favorite). Then Suss took a listen and realized it's the afternoon show and the Warner stuff is the better recorded evening show! Can't really hear half the drumming as you can in the evening show. HOWEVER, Suss was moved when hearing how Donny introduced him among the other member of the band. He didn't recall that part and that makes up for everything. Suss sets the record straight in Comments.

Haven't heard from Uncle, John very much as of late. But I do want to say that the
man really knows how to make music with a set of drums. He reminds me of Gadd,
not by way of style, but in his ability to morph what he executes into the music where
heads are not turned when they're not supposed to be. A very complimentary player
who seems to always enhance the entire musical spectrum he's involved in. And there
are actually few artists (drummers) who can play that way in my opinion.

I think it's a shame that he's not out there playing more, if at all. No

As much as we fought, I miss the knucklehead!

Had an idea for a Hathaway project I shared with Suss yesterday: breathe some new life into the Nu-Po recording, not that it needs it. Would be cool if some lyrics were penned for Donny's daughter, Lalah, to sing . . . could be a new latin-soul smash.

In fact, I'm gonna write it in the tradition of great lyricists Oscar Brown, Jr. and Jon Hendricks who penned great stuff over many jazz classics. My father and Oscar were Army buddies and I met the man when I was child . . .
