Dizzy Gillespie's Con Alma sandwiched in there . . .

Wow, now I feel wanted! lol First time recording this tune; used my trusty video camera again. It's coming along. Some weak fills throw things off and my funk is still lacking, but getting better! I'll share your replies with the composer and let him know WHO you both are.

That made my day, Don, as I consider you a referent power of the groove:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Referent_power

We've been playing more straight beats these days, but still play lots of swing/bop/waltz. Keep in mind we only have one weekly gig and would like to have at least one more . . . here are a few more from July 4th.

Ha, ha, Loved it! Hey. Woof is the piano player a big fan of Vince Guaraldi?

Groove was just a tad shaky in the samba section, I thought. Nice, nince, nice!
I would have like to have heard a more backbeat in Mercy as you did in the second
chorus and organ solo. The straighter the drummer plays this tune, the better it
sounds. It doesn't need a lot of embellishments. Some nice moments here, Woof!

Totally loved the way the keyboardist mixed the acoustic sound with the electric.
Ask him if he'll marry me, Woof... lol!

He's a big fan of Vince; we play a lot of it. In fact, we played three that day. He'll totally marry you. Just keeping up with him is all I can do. Latin and funk are my weak points. I'm more bop and waltz. But he can play anything. Here's another stab at funk from the day: http://www.fileden.com/files/2009/4/18/2409195/JazzStreamJuly4th2010/MemphisUnderground.mp3
(I totally fell apart by the end and the builds are spontaneous; we never played it like that before)

Never Can Say Goodbye
is the one I keep coming back to and I've got 20 songs from this day.

Oh well, that last post has lots of embarrassing moments. I realize I can play half that much and it would be better. Still learning that song and that lesson; a work in progress. I really appreciate you listening, Don and Ted. Threw more stuff on a player this morning. Kinda sick of the audio quality on most of it with the video camera's condenser mic, but a few are ok. Soon I'd like to get this trio in the studio and see what happens. But this is documentation for now and I learn so much listening. That's more than half the reason to record, just learning the songs and what can be done in the future.

Never Can Say Goodbye!

I think this is a core reason why those of us in Boomer’s Community have stuck together as long as we have.

I hear so much growth in all of us over the past 8 years since I’ve joined.

Nice job Keith. I hear your subtle syncopations within the dynamics of the music. You have been made free (independent) of the regimented approach to music many drummers take for granted when supporting others on the stage. Dictate Time while not being a slave to anyone’s direction – anticipate the changes while remaining behind the scenes.

Then break out when you are expected.

I love this from you Keith. I’ve always heard the potential from earlier years; I’m hearing the beginning of kinetic energy and enthusiasm.

Love It!

• P.S. Look at the bass player as much as you do the keyboardist now.
• P.P.S. Work on keeping cymbal time with whatever you choose to do with other hand or feet – Independence: 04 04 04!
• P.P.P.S. Work also on incorporating syncopations within the single or double stroke roll. They flow together to bring out the nuances – especially when you spread your limbs/wings to other sonor surfaces (cymbals, toms, feet, etc.).

This is spectacular from you Keith; reminds me of playing with Donny Hathaway (or the Guild of Sound/ATL,GA.) who would provide the same canvass within a stage set. We just had to be prepared as musicians.

I still maintain that Donny concert is your most important legacy among lots of important stuff, Suss. Thanks for the expert feedback. As usual, you're right on target, nailing what needs to be worked on . . . the P.S. and the P.P.S. are obvious to me while playing. The P.P.P.S. is a tall order! My rudiments are pretty much non-existent. I've got the George Lawrence Stone Stick Control book and have looked at the cover several times Wink

Really kind of you, Rac. Thanks so much for listening. Coming from someone who I know has chops and artistic ear (and eye!), it means a lot . . .

We have a new live recording of this song, not perfect by a long shot, but better sound quality:
http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/10/18/2149036//OHFOR0404041911.mp3

One day I hope to really nail it in the studio, hopefully soon. Just need to relax more and feel the funk. Gotta dance!
