| This is Isais Gil, the young man who won the Guitar Center drum off contest for 2010 in Los Angeles.
I found him very entertaining, and he's doing some creative things in his performance. See what you guys think.

Not sure how old he is.

| Very entertaining though a bit sloppy. But what can you expect when you have only 2 or three minutes to cram in a life's time of work and study. The G.C. drum off is a joke! I was asked to judge at my local store for this one and turned the offer down. I won't even attend them anymore. I really wish they would apply rules that would make it more music orientated rather than this "look ma, no hands" tricked out kinda thing. Personally I'm pretty disgusted with the whole idea of it as it stands today. It says nothing of who can REALLY play! It's all a big show of beat the cans inside out and the one who does it with the most tricks and flair wins! It's like watching a really good juggler.
They can HAVE it as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure he's won some nice prizes out of the deal. Actually kinda nice to see someone of different nationality win. |

Yes I would love to Here him on a Rock Jazz Track.
He looks Fun and I think his Own Style will be why he can do well.
Special Effects while playing are OK - so long as you can still play after a 10min Rock track.

| Obviously great chops, but didn't really grab my attention musically. Monotone choices. Not that I can play anything like that myself, just seems I've heard all that stuff before. Maybe if he expands his listening choices he'd come up with some interesting stuff. |

You have, Woof.
I think you and I share the same sentiments here. Seem like the drums have become an instrument of razzle-dazzle with many of these youngsters. This stuff tells me NOTHING as to the musicality (or as Prince would say, "musicology") of these kids. I really don't like the direction that drumming seems to be heading with our young up and coming players. And the G.C. Drum Off is just a perpetuation of all that.
It's old hat. |

| At least he has some dynamics in his playing instead of an all out slug fest. |

| I do like the cymbal technique he has. I believe Buddy Rich use to do that stuff as well. That same technique is applied to the snare drum, which is classic Buddy....I think. |

| Sorry to resurrect another older thread, but I thought the kid was as good as most of what is out there, and perhaps that is the sad thing. Us older guys had musical innovators who drew our attention and desires to grow as drumming musicians. It's one of the reasons I really like Benny Greb. I've never been into the whole stick twirling thing. But you know, even the old masters had all that stuff going decades and decades ago. Palmer had it in his solos. Still does. Entertainment value. Now, it seems to be the thing younger drummers are into most. I suspect the influence of Donati, Blackwell, Minneman, Lang and others have contributed to that aspect of it.
So, basically, you are saying the GC Drum Off is now little more than a showcase for who can do stick tricks the best? Sad.
When I hear these things I tend to see a connection to the vocal stylists of today. Lots of shouting and yelling but not a whole lot of actual singing melodies. In todays drummers I constantly hear all these hand and foot trips and quads like something falling down a flight of stairs. Great for some impact in a solo, but it seems the lion's share of what all these players do now.
I'd almost rather hear Ron Bushy play Inagaddadavida than some of these Rugby matches on a drum set. |
