Have you guys heard about this brand? Here's the set Billy played yesterday in Jerusalem. I was introduced to Buzin drums when Buzin has just started back in 2006. Now he's producing not only drums but cymbals (really great but expensive ). I think that he's done a great job over the years. It's interesting to know Billy's comments concerning the sound, the quality or some other characteristics of the drums he played yesterday.

It was the first time i saw Boomer playing his signature set. And it still was quite impressive even though i've been Billy's fan for over 20 years now and have seen the man in almost every possible musical situation ! The band's sound was very good. The drums (toms) sounded fantastic though the snare drum (not Billy's signature) almost killed my ears Laughing and the ride cymbal hardly cut through the full sound of the band.
Sorry, Ted, but i saw Camelia Ben Naceur only from the back so i can't judge her beauty Laughing But she's certainly delivered some amazing playing (especially on the tune featuring her charming intro together with the violin which reminded me one of my band's tunes ) as did all the musicians. And i really love the music from "Palindrome". It was quite a surprise to hear Stratus played very slowly at the beginning before it went back to its natural tempo. At the encore Billy introduced an Israeli guitar player (again, female Laughing ) and they've finished the set with Red Baron.
I also took my wife with me to the concert so she could finally see the man in flash after so many years of me driving her crazy with "...look what a wonderful solo", "... Billy has a new book/album" or ".. Billy is coming to Israel again!"! Her comment: "Billy is so cute" Very Happy Well, all i can say is that she understands drummers Laughing
This was also the first time that i couldn't stay after the show to say hello. Billy was busy signing CDs and it was great to see so many people standing in line. I have learned my "Palindrome" copy already so we went home to release the babysitter. Here's another picture which i couldn't help taking at the end of the show

thanks Igor for the review and another nice picture ! When you say "signature set" are you referring to the music he played , or to the drumset ?

The reason I ask is because Boomer's signature set is a Yamaha, unless he now has one from Buzin drums too? My guess is that Yamaha was unable to provide him with a set there, so he had to use the other drums. Maybe Boomer can speak on that.

Glad you were able to see this current band- I think it's one of the best line-ups Billy has had in recent years.

I meant the drum set but not the brand. I guess that Yamaha didn't have all the drums Billy needed. Oh, and by the way, Billy used a rocktagon crash for the concert.
I'd reallly wanted to hear Billy's comments on the drums he played. To me, the drums sounded fantastic!
And you are right, i really enjoyed the band and the music though i'd LOVE to see the Spectrum band live! Man, i just can imagine Billy playing "Quadrant 4" with all that sound and the lighting!!!

Great pictures Igor - thanks! The drums though, do look a tad smaller from what I'm use to seeing Boomer play. But I have to admit they are simply gorgeous!

The first thing I noticed that was a 'positive' was the quality of the bass drum sound: full and with depth for what I think is a 16" x 22". The toms in the mid-range were too "toppy" for my taste and did not respond to me with the same type of proportionate depth as did the bass drums. These were the 12" , 13" & 14" drums. I believe this could be a 'bearing edge' problem or a 'lack of depth in the shell" problem. I would have liked to have tried a shell in those dimensions with one more inch or two, in depth. I was told that the sound was great out front and I responded that I would have liked to hear somebody from the audience play the drums so I could have enjoyed them as much as they did from that perspective. Playing on stage and listening in the audience are two distinctly different animals and people tend to easily forget this. I am always looking to play for myself as a listener, just like the audience only I am on stage. If I can enjoy what I'm doing I am sure that the audience will also like it even more than if I don't know what is happening and they get a positive anyway. The floor toms had a good feel and thanks to the pirating of the performance on youtube, I could've heard that snare drum if I was in China or the other side of the world, it was sooooooooo loud! But, it was also pretty sensitive as well when dynamics were needed. All in all the drums made a good impression on me and I could see the possibilities in performance with them if they had drum heads and other dimensions in which to project they're unique character. cosmetically, I have a problem with the seams on each shell as they send the wrong message visually and give me the impression that the drum is not ready for market consumption.
Cymbals: I brought the wrong set for the kit and for the house but that's another story for another day.
Well, I hope this helps everybody.

thanks very much for sharing your perspective on the Buzin drums Boomer ! I always find it fascinating to see how particular you are about your sound, and to read about the points you brought up in your analysis.

That's what makes you, YOU, and why no one else sounds like YOU .

You also mentioned about bringing the wrong cymbals for the kit and the house. Was that from a projection point of view, or one of tonal quality, or both. If you have time to elaborate on that sometime, I would love to hear about it !

Thanks again, and continued best wishes,

11BUZIN Drums Empty Wrong Cymbals for the Room Wed Jun 22, 2011 4:45 pm

Ted:
I forgot that I needed to bring cymbals with me to Israel and as I was a bit spaced out and in a hurry, I chose a combination of "pies" that were not even close to being in sync with one another when I grabbed them as they were leaning against the front door of my storage room. And not until I arrived in Jerusalem did I open them to find out that I had played a bad joke on myself. The batch in the bag were totally unrelated, sound wise as they were cymbals that I had decided to return to different cymbal bags in the room, I just had not gotten around to doing it yet. Some cymbals projected a long way out and some were only meant for recording in the studio or other controlled environment. So, in the end I had to make do and consider the experience another lesson learned. Embarassed

That's a great road story Boomr ! When you realized what you were playing with, did you try and compensate by hitting the studio pies harder, and vice versa on the ones that projected ? Or did you just say "it is what it is" and play your normal way ? Or was it compensated for with the mics during sound check ?

thanks for sharing that !

Since we had a set of microphones that I was not familiar with, (I didn't see the manufacturers logo) taking the toms signal, I tried to get the stage monitor engineer to watch for signals from me regarding the overall balance of the drum set while we were performing. This is always a difficult task even in the best of circumstances so, I resigned myself to making do with what I had to work with once I realized that he would not be of much help to me as well. The problem with the cymbals were the same as what I faced with the drum set in the mid and low mid range frequencies; just no resilience or projection when struck. So, I suspect that the drums were not necessarily at fault, quality wise as much as the drum set being unable to project in a house that big without a proper sound system that was suitable to it's dimensions.

Didn't see your inquiry, Don, sorry about that. The bass player's name is Mike Mondesir. You can find him on my Traveller CD from 1994. And as I said before, the snare drum will get your attention with the right set of heads on it. The EVANS G Plus series is numero uno for me these days.

Wow, man. This is the current band? This band is great! Violin, too! I love it. This is deeply interesting.

After watching a vid of this band playing Stratus from the viewpoint of the percussionist, somewhere else on this forum, I commented the band sounded dry. What a difference watching from this angle and hearing it from another device capturing the action. It looks and sounds like a different band. Billy is smokin.'

Also, the drums. They sound really nice. I lean towards shallow toms, so they pricked my ears. That Octagon crash? Sounds muted compared to the other two. Ouch on that one. Do players pick things up at music stores/drum shops when they make mistakes like this? Perhaps there isn't time to track them down before performances.

I didn't notice anything special about the snare. It seemed pretty balanced with the whole set. The ride was lost though, which I hate in recorded mixing. Even professionally done, ride cymbals get lost.

Great musicians, Ted, you're right. Is there a DVD out of this band? I've read so much on the forum I forget. Oh, wait, I remember. There is. Starts with an "L." I need to get that.
