Hi, all, It's been awhile as I've doing some serious wood shedding
the last couple of months. I most certainly discovered some things
about myself. I never thought of myself as all that but I've had a
serious reality check in learning that I'm even less than what I thought
I was.

As of late I've been practicing with a method that I haven't used in MANY
Years.... Playing along with records (CD's actually)... At this point in time
I've been working very hard at playing with the musical patterns of Scott
Henderson and Gary Willis' "Tribal Tech" CD and Tom Coster's "Let's set the
record straight." This is some pretty involved stuff and I've learned that just
because you know it in your head does not mean that you can automatically
facilitate that knowledge with your hands and feet. figuring out what goes
where has been a real challenge physically speaking. My timing is good but
I'm finding myself zigging when I should zag and vise-vera.

But I must tell you, It's been hecka fun! I'm learning so much and my technical
execution is improving rapidly. I practice at least twice a day for an hour in the
afternoon and and hour during the early evening.

Also I'm using a new open hand confiuration setup that I really like. I've changed
the drums to accomadate this setup rather than myself. So I'm still playing as a right
handed player does. I sit very square and balanced at the kit. Fills are now generally
performed from right to left but that hasn't been a problem for me... Very cool!

Anyway, when you have some time, check out the photos on my facebook page.
Be well, everyone.

Hi Don,

I really like the set up your using with the Ddrum kit- It looks very playable, and will allow more possibilities with fills etc.
The floors on either side is always cool in my book.

I wouldn't get too down about your playing, because there really is no end to the learning and development. You're a great player, with a lot of experience and knowledge, AND you have great taste in music-so you just have to keep going and follow what inspires you to do musically.

The good thing is- that you do have the drive to keep exploring and changing, which can only lead to getting better (even if it hurts haha)..

I'm currently trying to develop more ostinato patterns, and I feel like a 10 year old as far as getting the coordination together haha...I have to write down each specific little thing to see how the notes land against each other..and it's a slow process right now- and it IS painful to try and grind through this stuff and make something musical out of it.

But- I know it's gonna make me better in the end...at least a temporary end that is--haha--Ther IS no end!!
Which is why I think we all love Drumming.

It all looks great Don, keep up the good work, and thanks for sharing---D.L.

Being honest with yourself is putting you over the top Don. I was wondering where you were. This board has been like a ghost town. Now I know that you are naturally left handed, but you play right handed, so how does it feel going right to left now, or are you use to playing that way sometimes ?

Hi, D. L. and thank you....

Yep, it's a slow grinding process. But like always, it'll come.
I'm not so much down on myself as much as me realizing that
I have a lot more work to so as to get where I'd like to be with
my skill level at this point and time. I'm working with more intent
and these CD's are giving me a good run for my efforts. The setups
are cool and I plan on getting another floor for the Tama set as I
really like the floor toms being on both sides. Of course you know
what you need to do, Dave... Hang in there and keep pluggin!

Spanky,

Thanks, man... You might want to look at the setup
again. You'll notice that I haven't switced to left. I still lead
with the right hand. The hi hat cymbals are on the right but
the pedal is still on the left via a cable. The toms are reversed
however. Good to hear from you and I hope all is well.

Take care guys.

Okay yeah, that hat being over there on the left threw me off.

Don,

It is a GOOD THING to arrive at the
threshold of learning and developing,
AGAIN and that is the key word.

cyclops

Most people love comfort. They love
NO CHANGE. You are not like that
and that is what we love about you.

cheers

Play on, man!!

Wild concept! Go for it!!

Very interesting setup!! I'm gonna try that out myself. Should open up the possibilities as the cross sticking factor vanishes....gives one another center!!
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the encouragements, all. I think Pete said it best
awhile ago: "There's more than one way to skin a cat."

Though I enjoy the idea of being different, this is not for the
sake of such. I'm always looking for ways to escalate myabilities
be it technically, musically or artistically. At the moment, I like where
this is heading.

Actually, I've been using this concept for a number of years as this is
how I setup when I play two bass drums. But how often do I get to
do that? So recently the decision was made to apply the idea to a
single kick setup.... So far so good.
