Does it take talent sure it does.
I guess ted bundy had a certain talent.
I guess i have a closed mind.
That's cool i am perfectly happy
with what i am in the process of studying
so i won't be competing posing for poster boy
for necrophiliac journal this month.
that's my choice i'm stickin to it
maybe i'll never make millions
I'm okay with that

meanwhile i will be listening to music i find uplifting and
rhythmically sophisticated like bill cobham, bill bruford, Avishai Cohen,
dennis chambers, sali okka, ivo papasov, mamady keita, lenny white
ringo
etc etc etc and other bands
with out any satanic imagery not that it bothers me but it's just really not what i like to think about when doing what i find one of the the most spiritual activities in my life,
i like to think of at as music.

There is a place for all music---except country hahahhaa....

I like heavy music and Metal. Not the type of Death Metal with the cookie monster vocals, and all that blast beating and stuff. Just not my thing-

I Particularly like the British and European Metal- Judas Priest, Scorpions, Accept, Michael Schenker, Motorhead, Iron Maiden. Yngwie Malmsteen, Dio, Black Sabbath- etc... They are all great players...Heavy, but there's a song there with Melody.

I liked about the 1st 4 black sabbath albums.
i totally agree there is room in the world for all music. I just don't
listen to all of it. i have certain standards. I can appreciate the discipline and creativity but it's not what i find interesting sonically as far as tone and presentation. I have so many other interests in music why spend time with stuff that doesn't suit my fancy? i think it really helps if you're absolutely snockered on alcohol or some lethal combination of chemicals. So i guess i missed the boat on that one. so glad i did!
i like when they do bluegrass versions of metal like hayseed dixie does with ACDC. i prefer the songs in the bluegrass format much more than the heavy grinding chunkachunka style. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYJUywl7CFw

Thanks for the post Kenny. Yeah, I see your point and resonate with it. Death Metal to me (and the playing of it) is too intense and conveys the wrong motivations. There's so much frustration there that the proper questions don't even beg the right answers. It's destructive and demoralizing. Yet I do appreciate the musical facility those inclined exercise to express their musicianship.

For me, I'm a lyrical drummer. And if the words aren't right, I'm not on the stage nor in the room.

that's fine. who cares? the technique is negated by the music.
If people want to listen to it i don't care. i don't find it interesting.
the funny thing is it has lots of time signature changes and amazing playing. i just don't care for the general tonality. It certainly takes skill i can see that. The whole hard rock music scene has not interested me in general
for a very long time. Occasionally i'll check out a video like megadeth i think is a lot more interesting than most of the others due to the mahavishnuesque guitar runs and, the drummer is pretty happening too!
But death metal as a genre is very abrasive to me and i don't need it. it doesn't feed my soul man! afro i have plenty of other choices. Sleep

What draws me to Heavy Metal is all that power and sustain, from Black Sabbath 1 to my favorite rock group bar none Smashing Pumpkins, all that guitar sustain draws me to it. I love playing drums to all that power, it drives me. But to each his own, some just don't like the stuff, but I am 54 years old, and I am still a Heavy Metal freak, which tells me that I am going to die that way.

I can dig it, for a little while
and then I am reminded that
what separates notes are
spaces and it's the spaces
that define. At a certain
speed, definition is lost and
there, anyone's guess is
where we might be.

The man doesn't like death metal.... What is anybody gonna do? We all like what we like and we discard the rest.

It's the way it's done.

hella is cool. I can dig that. It is interesting.
the meshuggah video did something for me alright. I think it soiled myself. I found the overall sound atrocious. the drummer is great. But i don't find that style interesting in the least. it is dbl bass drums filling up some odd time signature that changes throughout. Intellectually that could be interesting but in practice for me it sounds extremely one dimensional. And the rest of the band does nothing to create melody or anything syncopated against that which might have given it some legs. but alas they are stuck in a very monotonic style that just doesn't fly. Again i've heard their drummer do some good stuff but that band is not it. I thought it sucked and not very well at that. back to you jim.

the hella live video is 2 guys playing a somewhat complex strict composition. Again very little in the way of polyrythm or harmony or improvisation. and that's why it sounds so one dimensional. But they are creative and having fun so they are alright in my book. Messhugah can take a flying leap though.

I find modern metal to be literally frightening. Especially is that the case when I think of its influence on young people and kids. How a baby grows up and listens, with pleasure, to a sound that is so dark and evil is beyond me. Today's metal, which I hear ONLY in passing, thank God, makes Sabbath sound like the Beach Boys.

Noise is now called music. No recognizable melody, harmony and rhythm. Just chaos, explosions of sound, relentless negative energy and words.

For people who believe in "hell" I cannot help but think if someone who died back in the 80s rose up to hear the metal of 2000 they would think they rose up in hell.

Of course, the same might be said for people who died in 1910 and rose up to hear the Beatles. Nonetheless, discernible melody, harmony, and rhythm can be heard in 60s music. Today? It's like aural war taking place.
