I guess everybody has had embarrassing moments in the 80's, this video Billy did
with Bobby and the Midnights has to be one of them.
It is somewhat painful to watch, "I Want to Live in America" is a track that attempts to
fit into the MTV format in 1984. It is actually pretty funny to watch now, so here goes:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWscxdleZzI&playnext_from=TL&videos=V6iYO3uxzSY&feature=rec-LGOUT-exp_stronger_r2-2r-1-HM

The only cool part is, you get to see Billy playing a vintage Tama Imperialstar drum kit!
The rest of the band is acting like they just did a few lines of blow! lol!!

I thought that was really cool, I mean it is a 1980's video and to see Billy do something like this is great even in the end where it looks like he was singing.

My question is, Why does this have to be an embarrassing moment?! Though this choice of music is not for me, this was an accomplished band that did what they did quite well. It's also the thing that sets Billy apart from most other drummers in that he has involved himself in MANY different styles and forms of music. Billy Cobham is a drummer's drummer, an honest to goodness WORLD class player! This is only one among a slew of countless musical projects that has earned him that status.

Nothing to be embarrassed about.

Personally, I don't think it's an embarrassment. We do what we have to in terms of career building. Sometimes or in most cases we do what calls for in moving foward - which is just a process or phase for what we love doing. If we keep that perspective in mind at all phases of life, then they don't bother or not meaning to be an embarrassment but rather proof of commitment and driven passion to what's ahead in the bigger picture of life. That's where many tend to lose it. The blessing may have been just around the corner but we lacked the ability to see in a wider scope on the paramount picture of life. Wink ........I belive you can agree that Mr. Cobham lived it out. I call this vision - without it, we perish and that's a God-given.

Take note at Mr. fuzit's commentary. Nothing profound, yet is the weight of real life that demands it's rightful attention.
BTW, I think this is a good topic that allows for further insight on how we see things. I don't think Mr. drumman intended to sound demeaning at all nor personal about Boomer. It sounds more intended towards the commercialism of mainstream and not the person. But hey, that's what he thinks. What makes my opinion the solution that settles the differences of life over anyone else?

I'm no longer commenting on this topic but thank you drumman for the topic at hand Smile
Just my take too,
Rac

This was just a post for a laugh, it was not meant to be taken seriously.
You have to find some humor in some of the stuff from the 80's.
As usual some of the more negative people took offense to the post...oh well?
At least I gave a few people some amusement...lol!

Well, as for me, the video made me smile. I remember seeing this on MTV and saying to myself: "you go Billy" with a laugh.

That being said, I still don't see it as an embarrassing moment. And if that makes me negative in your view then so be it.

I guess everybody has had embarrassing moments in the 80's, this video Billy did

My response to your post was simply, why does it have to be an embarrassing moment? If that's not what you actually meant then maybe you should not have written it. That which is spoken or written in direct form can only be interpreted in a direct manner until explained otherwise. As far as I know, no one here reads minds.

Bob Weir's cocaine stare is funny enough, no disrespect to Billy,
he did a fine job. The Grateful Dead are legendary for their drug abuse,
I just find it funny that Bob Weir tried to do a "pop" video for MTV,
I am sure Billy was paid well, but somehow this is not one of his most
memorable moments in music...others may have a different opinion.

I know that one of the highlights and memorable moments in Billy's career was performing with Peter Gabriel. Now, P.G. is cool, but he's nothing to write home about on the technical and artistic level. But it's not always about that, sometimes it's just about having the skill to do what's needed on whatever level. It's not always about the money but simply being a part of the band.

I'm sure there was something appealing in this project for Billy to do this but to assume that the appeal was money simply because it's outside of the 'normal' project box where I might place him or where I'm used to hearing and seeing him and deeming it as one of his embarrassing moments would be prejudge-mental.

That's my different opinion.

I imagine that this was just a ways to a means for Billy.
He may have been between bands at the time and was approached by these people to do this project with them.
If you look at all of the popular drummers today I'm sure you will find recordings that are "less than par" of their musical abilities.
The way I see it, he was playing drums and making his livelyhood from it.
I don't see anything wrong with that....
I'm sure he was acheiving his goals at the time and doing other projects, to boot.

You dude's have no sense of humor here, it is ashame.
Not everything is so serious, laugh a little sometime.
You are not being graded on your response here,
I don't think I will waste my time posting these kind of humorous posts in the future,
too much sarcasm and not much humor found on this forum.

It's cool, if you like the video, it was done over 25 years ago, so it doesn't make too much of a
difference now. I don't even think the stuff is in print anymore!
So arguing over the worth of the material is pointless.

Nobody's arguing except you, drumman. Understand that it's just as easy to find humor in something without finding it embarrassing. I agree with you that there is humor in watching this but some of us don't see it as an one of Billy's embarrassing moments.

From time to time all our posts and some things said in them are challenged... But I think you have the right idea, If it bothers you that much then don't post.

I appreciate you putting up the video though.

I never heard of Bobby and the midnights till this video. I don't know about embarrassing for Billy. I guess I might cringe myself in looking back on something like that. On the other hand, I think Billy elevates what he's involved in, including that band. Just having his whole kit in this thing, including the third floor tom, was pretty out there by 1984, was it not? At least for music like this. Billy did the same for his time with Jack Bruce. Nothing profound in the music, really, but Billy took it places it would not have gone, otherwise.

The Hammer/Williams clip. Same deal. 1980s music elevated by the sheer presence and power of Tony Williams. But Tony was into this kind of stuff, too. On the other hand I like Jan Hammer and Rudess anyway. Sounded pretty cool, to me.
