I thought Spanky and Don would like that video, although he does take it outside a bit in this rehearsal.

Yep Woody he did take it outside a bit. Check this cover out of Fire

I think this kid has it more like Mitch Mitchell though, than the above guy.

Now this is a perfect example of overplaying - don't get me wrong, vinnie is a phenomenal drummer and a favorite of mine. But this piece is a guitar feature piece and he put way too much into it. I think it detracted from the guitar work.

I don't know the context of why he was playing it. Was this a rehearsal for a show, or was he just showing off in front of a few friends ?

and what's with the charts ??? I know Vinnie can read his ass off, but what's there to read in Manic Depression ? It's not that complicated.

I didn't watch the other vids yet. But thanks for posting that Woody.

Outside??!! I hope that was just for demo purposes and not what he'd do in the actual playing of the song.
That was just plain ole' over playing. affraid

I just noticed your comment after posting this, Brother Ted. I mirror you on your comments about the charts too. scratch

It's either busy busy or sombody is bored of the tune. If it's cover I personally like it as close to the original with some personality to it of course.

That was my insinuation of playing outside, Ted. You hit the nail on the head. I believe he was showing off by overplaying as you notice at the end that he said that the first take was better.
He recorded this for Kimo Williams, who does sound like Jimi Hendrix, somewhat, for an album that Kimo put out.
I went to Berklee with Kimo and he lived down the hall from me in the dormitory at 150 Mass ave.
Kimo was at Berklee the same time as Vinnie was and played in his big band.
Overplaying......... yes on all counts and if you notice he isn't even looking at the charts.

was that Kimo that hugged him at the end ?

So this video was taken back during Berklee times ? Vinnie definitely looks younger in it so it's interesting to see just how good he was at that stage.

thanks Woody !

I think you should watch it again, Woody. He looks at the charts a bunch of times.

Yes, that was Kimo that hugged him at the end and it was Kimo singing and playing guitar.
If I recollect, that video was taken in the 1990's sometime, I believe.
Well after his Berklee years. I think Vinnie only went to Berklee for 1 or 2 years. Around 1975 or 1976.

thanks Spanky. Well then your guitarist must be really good if he can play like Mark Hitt. Can't wait to see something by your band. Type Mark's name on youtube and see what comes up. He's played with John Entwhistle from the Who, Don Airey from Deep Purple, and Brian Johnson from AC/DC and also recorded with Robert Plant and John Bonham. There's a possibility he will be replacing Malcolm Young in AC/DC as I've heard malcolm has developed Alzheimer's and is not doing well.

And if truth be told, I feel that Tim is actually even better than Mark overall. But they are long=time friends and there is absolutely no competition between them. Here is an example of them trading back and forth. See what you think.
