Marco was interesting and I thought
Virgil was, too but they changed DT's
sound. They had more of a personal
identity that separated them. Mike's
sound is right alongside DT and he is
just the better fit, for them. I would
prefer the influence of Virgil or Marco,
but it would have changed them.
It was already too much change to
have another drummer, much less
one that would changed their sound
from a non-linear to a much more
linear support. Technically, that is
the difference, in my opinion. Virgil
and Marco are on another plane.
Don't get me wrong. Mike's got
incredible skill. It's just that he is
primarily a non-linear player and
that band thrives on that. I don't
prefer it but that's me. We are
talking about DT fans. They need
a player like Mike.
Now, me - I think Virgil's mind is
way over all of them. He is so
overwhelming as to be almost
intimidating, in terms of ideas.
Marco is just crazy playful and I
love that, too. I prefer them but
know that they were not the best
choice for this band.
Here I am, almost 52 years old
and I am still hearing the same
rubbish about: "Who's the best
drummer?" etc - yadda-yadda.
At a certain level of proficiency,
there is no best; just different.
Why can't younger players just
wake up? A few bpm's faster?
C'mon. Is that how we judge
fine players?
I just want to know who the
bartender is that's pouring
this nonsense. This world is
trying my patience, when it
comes to appreciation. To
youngsters, I say: "Look to
bend it, your way. Take ex-
ample from the fathers, who
did it their way, against the
grain. Understand that the
blemish can be the beauty
mark of your identity. Per-
fect can be boring."
Regards,
