Part of my Lenny White research:
Classic Chapin Exercise turn into drum solo
Hello people,
Just thought I share a video of Mr. White using a technique that some here (maybe) are familiar with. Lenny has been applying this technique in recent recordings. To some of us we can remember our early practicing days going through the Jim Chapin's book on stick control? For those who are not familliar with Chapin's approach it was using the standard jazz (ching-ching-a-ching) pattern on the ride, then playing different notations on top of that with the snare hand. Lenny takes that exercise and applies what supposedly was restricted to the snare, but comes out of the box and spreads it across the toms and bass drum respectfully. It's one of the subtle things Lenny's been doing and thought you may find it interesting and daringly prompted to trying. It seems it orignally started as a ride/snare coordinate exercise back in the 70s, but Lenny took it's practicality to another level recently for live performance purposes. Great stuff here and hope we grow into appreciating this major league/legendary musical contributor in the years past and to come.
Just click on the title top of the video's viewing screen not the arrow.
You can go straight to hearing and seeing this technique at point 156 on the video slider.
Thank you,
