Looks like Carl had a close call:
Carl Palmer: E.coli turned me vegan

There a several famous vegans who were forced to become vegans/vegetarians due to poor health. They could no longer digest properly. People like Bill Clinton, Albert Einstein, Adolph Hitler and Mike Tyson.
The reason is that diet shifts our flora (microbes eat what we eat). Sometimes it shifts flora in the wrong direction.
"Red meat + wrong bacteria = bad news for hearts"
What we eat shifts our flora. The latest new shows "vegans and vegetarians made far less TMAO than meat eaters. Faecal studies showed that meat eaters and non-meat eaters also had very different types of bacteria in their guts. Hazen says that a regular diet of meat probably encourages the growth of bacteria that can turn l-carnitine into TMAO."

TMAO is important for stabilizing protein, but apparently we can have too much of a good thing . . . I'm no expert, but I don't think anyone really is in the world of intestinal balance, where all health begins. It's more art than science these days.
Has the dawn ever seen your eyes?
Have the days made you so unwise?
Realize, you are.
Had you talked to the winds of time,
Then you'd know how the waters rhyme,
Taste of wine,
How can you know where you've been?
In time you'll see the sign
And realize your sin.
Will you know how the seed is sown?
All your time has been overgrown,
Never known.
Have you walked on the stones of years?
When you speak, is it you that hears?
Are your ears bone?
You can't hear anything at all.
