Sad news to report . The great trumpet player Lew Soloff has passed. I met him back in his Blood, Sweat & Tears days when I worked for an answering service and he was a client. He happened to live down the block so he would come in to pay his bill and hang. NIce man. RIP Lew !

From his website:

Trumpet Legend Lew Soloff passed away in the early morning hours of Sunday, March 8, 2015 in New York City.
The cause of death was a heart attack, according to his daughters Laura Solomon and Lena Soloff. “Dad had more friends than anyone I know. He was so loved by so many. His life overflowed with people who cared about him,” stated Ms. Solomon.

A private funeral service is planned for Monday, March 9, 2015.

Soloff, whose career spanned more than 50 years was the consummate New York jazz musician. The list of his musical associations which includes; Gil Evans, Blood Sweat and Tears, Frank Sinatra, Carla Bley, Barbra Streisand, Machito, Marianne Faithfull, Paul Shaffer, Manhattan Brass, Jon Faddis and Ornette Coleman exhibits his extraordinary range and talent.

A public celebration and memorial will be organized and more information will be provided shortly.

This is sad news. I met him when he performed with Billy once
and I was the drum tech. "Billy And Friends" that featured
Essiet Okon Essiet on upright bass, Donald Harrison on sax,
Patrice Rushen on keys, of course Billy on drums and Lew
on trumpet. This unit was smokin! and I remember whenever
Billy introduced Mr. Soloff, or after he had taken a solo, the
audience would begin to chant: "Lew, Lew, lew...

My wife had the privilege of taking a picture with him and I
also captured some video of the band's rehearsal the day of
the concert just up the street from Yoshi's Oakland.
A very nice man that could play his *ss off!

Rest in peace, Mr. Soloff and thank you for the wonderful
memories.
