Rewrapping or Laminating Your Drums Black-latch-kit

I have seen their work. They
are really fine.

That ^ is an example of their
re-covering. I am actually im-
pressed with their shells.

I might end up buying their
acrylic shells, down the road,
with wooden hoops. I have
some ideas for a kit.

I will be going with smaller
kicks and possibly two (18
and a 20). The toms will
start, with a 10 and I am
thinking of ending with a
18 or even killer 20 timp-
tom. Well, that is my idea.

Regards,

That's interesting; wooden hoops with acrylic shells. It's been that long since I remembered hearing the sound of acrylic. The wooden hoops would have alot to do what it sounds like..maybe?

Yeah Spanky, this company puts out some illest (great) skins. I'm familiar with these covers and am thinking on designing my own for my Tamas. There is adhesive vinyl that can be printed on, and is 're-positional' meaning that you can always take them off later and replace with another design. The stuff is all, if not most, designed in programs like Photoshop or Illustrator. You can do fantastic imagery with these graphic tools. Glad you reminded me of these covers.

Okay Spanky, this is what I have in mind as far as shell wraps. This is just a digital visual presentation of my thoughts using, as I've mentioned, Photoshop CS4 and Illustrator. I wanted sort of a tatoo-ish look on a crate.

It's not the usual wraps because I would rather print on transparent material so that the natural beauty of the wood shines as well. This is what I mean by having it custom designed. I've not seen a transparent shell skin as of yet. I can do this. As soon as I get more time, I might just do this.

Equipment needed is a large format printer. I have a Visual Edge 36" printer made by Epson. The inks (called ribbons) I'll be using, as with my sign works, are UV protection exterior grade and will not wash off if waiting to get inside a building on a wet day lol! But who's going to be outside with his drums on a wet day?....Well, unless the wife kicks me out!lol!

Again, having fun between meetings lol! Very Happy lol!

I started re-wrapping drums back in the 70s using wallpaper. Typical wraps came next, but mostly wood veneer. I'm about to do it again on my current set. Cut down some of the shells, new sizes, old sizes, total half-tom set again, except this time I cut the bass drums down to half sizes, as well. I'm tired of low end boom. I want articulation throughout the set. So, I cut the bass drums down to 11x22 and 12x24.

I remember Ginger Baker mentioning his favorite Ludwig set had an 11x22 which he loved. So, we'll see how this works out when I'm done with it all.

I just finished a set not that long ago and all the drums, every one, developed cracks all over the place. I just hate lacquer. I always use tung oil and this time went lacquer and it looked great when I finished. Didn't stay that way though. Removed all the veneer. Have to start from scratch. Bummer.

But, yes, re-wrapping turns an old set into a new set just like that. Easy to do, too. This time around I am going to try using some fastcap two-sided tape - contact cement on a roll, they call it. Just have to decide on a veneer. Or something else.
