Just found out Buddy Miles has passed last night. Haven't investigated the details but he was only in his 60's I'm sure. still way too young.

Am going to see Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood tomorrow night for the last of their 3 reunion shows at the Garden. Ironically in the set list for the first two nights was Them Changes, as well as Voodoo Child.

I did see Buddy once with the Buddy Miles Express opening for Ten years After at the Garden. My kind of drummer - bets the hell out of the drums. R I P Buddy, and thanks for all the great music. Peace, TED

Here's the follow-up. he was actually only 60

Hendrix Drummer Buddy Miles Dies At 60
Posted by Dan Marsicano on 02.27.2008

Drummer for legend guitarist passes away...

Buddy Miles, who co-founded and played drums for Band of Gypsys with Jimi Hendrix, passed away yesterday at the age of 60.

Miles was born Sept. 5, 1947, in Omaha, Neb., and was introduced to music at a young age by his father, who played in a band called the Bebops. As a young man he also played with Wilson Pickett, the Delfonics and the Ink Spots.

Miles played with Hendrix in Band of Gypsys, which was formed in 1969 after the Jimi Hendrix Experience had broken up. Miles met Hendrix in the early 60's, but didnt collaborate with him until 1968's Electric Ladyland, which Miles played drums on.

Miles would later run in legal trouble, but returned to the spotlight in 1986 as the spokesperson for California Raisins. In 2004, Miles and Billy Cox, bassist of Band of Gypsys, revisited the Band Of Gypsys material for a live album, "The Band of Gypsys Return," which was released two years later.

I just have to chime in on Buddy's
passing. Gosh, how can you put
value on his contribution to Jimi,
in Band of Gypsy's and their col-
lective impact on music? That
album changed everything. It
was one of the very first that I
learned to play.

Thank you, Buddy. Thank you.

Drummers, everywhere, will live
your legacy.

RIP.

Some of the best Buddy Miles I've heard; recent 2006 release. I think Colin shared this with us last year. I still need to get that cd, Burning Desire.

Ever hear of drummer Rocky Isaac? Here's the story of Rocky sitting-in with Jimi (Jimi asked for Rocky to sit-in on a session without ever hearing him play) and having troubles locking the beat:
http://www.jimihendrix.com/magazine/502/502,features,roomfullofmirrors.html

(NOTE: in this story, one Punky Meadows is derided by Jimi, immortalized by FZ with Bozzio at his best here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSUHGcVda0g )

And here's Drone Blues with Rocky on drums, formerly credited to Mitch Mitchell on Nine To The Universe:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yq7tnNdaP88

Flash forward to 1997: is this the same Rocky Isaac busted for 582 lbs. of baled marijuana in Jamaica??

Yes I did post it on the former Great Billy Cobham Forum Board,
Burning Desire is a must to buy due to that Full Un-Cut 'MLK' named jam
(later renamed redone/edited in '75 as Captain Coconut)
it is great Drums and Cow Bell from Buddy Miles back in 1970.

I must say that this comment of Colin's makes a lot of sense. One body folks and there are no replacements. As we grow older, we really need to think very hard and seriously about our ongoing health. I was looking at pictures of Buddy on his website. Not one picture was he standing up in and he was WAY overweight! When we are young, our bodies sort of rejuvinate on their own. But as we get older, we must take direct action to stay fit and healthy. I cannot take my body for granted the way I used to 30 years ago. I must make a very concsious and physical effort to stay healthy and sharp, and with God's blessing, live a long and fruitful life. To me, it's twice as sad when someone goes before they actually had to. Buddy Miles neglected his body and he paid the price of that neglect with his very own life.

That's really too bad. No Sad

Yes it is real sad
makes me think of Barry White.

I can not blame anyone who just loves great food,
but the older you become it is worth trying to reduce the fat
if possible.

It is possible, Colin, and that's what's so sad. Those who go out like that really don't have to...

Just got back from Clapton/Winwood at the Garden for the final night of their 3 show reunion. Wow ! Songs from Blind Faith, Derek & Dominoes, Traffic, Jimi and solo albums made up the set list for the evening.

Clapton was blistering ! Winwood played great also on both guitar and keys. And he still sounds like he did when he was 17 with the Spencer Davis Group, though they played none of those tunes. Both really seemed to enjoy playing together and they meshed perfectly, both instrumentally and vocally.

Right now there are no plans for any more shows together, but I'd highly recommend attending if they happen to do any more.

They played Them Changes in tribute to Buddy Miles and Clapton absolutely killed on Hendrix's Voodoo Chile !

12 out of 10.
I'm floating. Peace, TED bounce

Wow! Buddy was one of my faves. I last saw him perform in a Tower Record's parking lot back in 78' I loved him perform with Jimi Hendrix in the 'Band of Gypsies.' Solid to the core and keeps it all locked down while Jimi is on the fly.....Always love him in heart and that's forever man. Wow...60 is not that old.
