that played with Jon Hammer during the mid seventies through early eighties?
I'm thinking it was a ___________ Smith. I know the last name is correct but what was his first name?

He was a great drummer along the league of Sonny Emory and not recognised as well.

Thanks,

Rac

Absolutely loved Tony Smith's work on Jan Hammer's "Oh yeah" album. I want to do the vocal tune "One to one" that they did on that project, and I think that is Tony singing lead too! That man can make the most outside odd meter patterns swing! I can't understand why this record is so little talked about. That's some incredible stuff. It's very near the top of my all time favorite fusion albums.

Hey, thanks guys for sharing that information. I've been long trying to remember (seniors downtime) but just couldn't recall. Im glad you guys remembered him. You all agree this was a fine drummer not recognized as he should've been. Wonder why is that?..hmmmm Question silent

And yes, that's the thing I do remember was his intricate drum patterns that was so perfect for Hammer's style of music. This guy was pushing fusion beyond many in the day.

Wow Pete! That's too awesome you actually had a chance to seeing him live recently. Does he still hold the same intensity in playing?

And yeah D that's one of my favorite albums that rocked my senses in playing during the seventies as well.

Thanks all,

Rac

Rac,

I don't know if you remember him but there was a friend of mine that used to be a member here back in the day. His name was Art Padilla. Good local drummer from my neck of the woods that worked with Pete Escovedo on several occasions... Anyway, Tony Smith lived in either San Francisco or Daly City, pronounced Daily (a suburb of S.F.) for awhile and Art went over to his house. He said Tony sat down at his kit and showed him all kinds of cool stuff.

Have mercy on me Lord....I envy Art!

Having said that....Is there any way of communicating with your friend Art? If so, can we obtain information about his encounter with Tony Smith in drum matters D?

You have my email do you? Again, if all possible, if this can happen I would appreciate that information dearly.

Thanks,

Rac

I talk to Art on a regular basis, Rac. I'll pass this on and see if I can get him to re-hook over here.

I was looking for your email address the other day and couldn't find it... Send it to my PM.

Yeah Rac, Tony did some amazing stuff on that album!!

The Violin player (can't remember his name) wasn't that good, but Jan, Tony and Fernado Saunders on Bass made-up for it.

Steve Kindler was the violinist - and he wasn't that good ?????

He played alongside Jean Luc Ponty in the Mahavishnu O. II .

While I wouldn't put him in the league of Jerry Goodman, Jean Luc , or Didier Lockwood, when I saw the Jan Hammer Group play , he was darn good !
