Billy Cobham played in Finland yesterday (on the 3rd of April). He came here for two reasons; to participate on the fusion guitarist Tuomo Orrenmaa’s third record and to promote the film “Sonic Mirror”, which will be shown at the movie theatres here at the end of this month. The movie was actually once shown here last year (probably because the director is from Finland and some parts of the movie were shot here) and I saw it then.
Unfortunately the restaurant in which Billy Cobham played together with three Finnish musicians was fully booked, so some of us were waching the show behind the glass from the street. You could still both hear and see the performance quite well from outside. I stayed there for about 45 minutes.
Here’s a picture of Billy Cobham at the studio. The article mentions the movie “Sonic Mirror” (the background and in which parts of the world it was made) and the recording sessions. Also Cobham is saying that “fusion is no longer detested. It has come back and with force”.

The bass player that Billy Cobham played with is Pekka Pohjola. He is considered as the most prominent electric bass player of this country since the 70’s. Below there’s three video clips of him some 30 years ago when he was a member of a Swedish progressive rock group called Made in Sweden. He plays solos on the first two cuts.
Mr Cobham, if you’re reading this, what do you think about Pekka Pohjola as a bass player. You sure sounded solid together...
