Dennis Chambers w/ Tower of Power What Is Hip?

Interesting approach. Thanks for posting
this, Spanky. I would never have thought
Dennis ever sat in with T.O.P.

Actually, I didn't care too much for Dennis'
rendition on this tune. That sort of 1 - 2
snare - kick, snare - kick feel didn't really
do it for me. Of course the groove was
there but I thought he simplified things
a bit too much. I guess less isn't always
more.

The JB groove was pretty cool though!

Here is Dennis talking about playing with Tower Of Power.

Rock Solid, Spanky... I was watching a clip
of D.G. playing what is hip. Though I like
his approach to the song better than Dennis',
he certainly doesn't have the power and drive
that Dennis has. It looked like the other players
in the band were really diggin Dennis' solid groove.

That last clip is the Dennis we all know and love.

I remember seeing these clips back a ways and wondered why Dennis took a stiffer approach. I agree, Garabaldi gave it a more fluid, linear feel.

Interesting to see clips of Dennis with P-Funk and then watch him years later doing ToP stuff.

He was still kicking it though.

Yeah, for sure.

I just get the impression he was on auto-pilot, taking in the scene and thinking, as he stated in the interview, "Wow, I'm playing with Tower of Power. This is so cool."

Dennis always kicks.... His presence is going to
be felt no matter what. I didn't care much with
what he did with the tune on this clip. But as
always, he did it with that signature Dennis
Chambers confidence and authority.

I notice on recent clips he's wearing glasses. I wonder how long it took for him to get used to them.

I once saw a clip of Dom Famularo (one of my favorites) knocking his glasses right off his head.
