I saw Buddy Guy perform here at the San Jose State University Blues Festival. I think his singing and playing is among the worst I've ever heard... Very sloppy performer. If he doesn't have a decent band behind him as he does in this clip, you can pretty much count on a completely jacked performance when it comes to a Buddy Guy show.

Don.

Eric Clapton said "Buddy Guy was to me what Elvis was for others." Clapton, who's not prone to hyperbole, insisted in a 1985 Musician magazine article that "Buddy Guy is by far and without a doubt the best guitar player alive...if you see him in person, the way he plays is beyond anyone. Total freedom of spirit, I guess… He really changed the course of rock and roll blues."

As far as Eric Clapton is concerned, I think he is off the chain... Lela, Tears in heaven.... Just wicked music.

And now, I'm an even bigger fan and am that much more impressed with his musical accomplishments as I'm just finding out he created these great songs while tone deaf.

No offense, but to claim that “Buddy Guy is by far and without a doubt the best guitar player alive..." is quite an exaggeration. So this "guy" (pardon the pun!) is better than for instance Mike Stern, Allan Holdsworth, John Mclaughlin, Al Di Meola, Scott Henderson, Pat Metheny? Of course you should not compare musicians of different musical genres, but still....

Kind regards,
Anders

Anders, do Finns have some kind of diplomat gene? Congrats to Finnish diplomat Martti Ahtisaari winning the Nobel Peace Prize a couple weeks ago:

Jump off the fence, dude. Buddy Guy is the best. And, Don, we've been through this before. You are too good for your own ears. You're from CA; do some shrooms and get back to me.

McLaughlin's pretty good though:

Thanks Woofus, the Nobel Peace Prize winner Martti Ahtisaari was actually our president between 1994-2000. Personally I would have liked him to be in the office for another six years (12 years is the maximum amount here), but that didn’t happen. Now we have a female president, Tarja Halonen, who resembles Conan O’ Brien Smile ,who was/is popular here in Finland. He actually visited us in February 2006. Here’s two clips I found on the youtube about this visit.

Saw Buddy circa 1986 at his bar called The Checkerboard Lounge with a couple friends . . . was his 50th birthday party and we were tripping and had our picture in the paper the next day . . . Jr. Wells was too drunk to make the stage. I was just a 24 year old white guy like everyone else in the audience (not quite true, but not far from it).
