I've been using some 13" sabian fusion hats mostly.
Sometimes i break out my 35 yr old 14"new beats for reggae and rock.

I don't bring alot of cymbals anymore.
i use my zildjian 20" custom dark ride
and a 17" thin crash.
But now i have this 20" pang.

I haven't used any splashes or small crashes for a while. i do like having them on the kit but it's usually more hassle to rig up a stand. I think i will start playing my splashes more though. they are nice to break things up with. They'll slice carrots too Twisted Evil

So what's your favorite set up?
What do you use for what type of music?

HI guys, Let's see. Since I'm only playing with my cover band doing classic rock, soul and some country I use:

14" Newbeat Hi-Hats
22" A Zildjian Medium Ride
20" Zildjian China Boy Low
18" Sabian Thin Crash - If it's a bigger stage I will add an 18" A Zildjian Crash
8" Sabian Splash between the toms

For special occasions I will also bring along a 22" Swish that was formerly used by Boomer. It only has one rivet left in it.

Peace, TED

I have a wide variety that I use, but lately it's been

14'' K Custom Session hats
18'' Istanbul Dark Crash
20'' Istanbul Traditional Ride
20'' Istanbul Trash Cymbal

Sometimes I mix in some Zildjian A Customs , or I might use a thin K crash cymbal in place of my top hi hat cymbal.

Good Topic-

Well, for the classic rock band, I use all Paiste 2002's. 13" sound edge hats, 18",16" crashes, 11" and 8" splashes, 22" ride, and an 18" Novo China.

For the fusion stuff, its most Bosphorus Ferit Turk series. 13" hats, 18", 16", crashes, 21" ride, 8" splash, a small Sabian Max Stax, and a 16" Sabian Evolution.

Sabian, Istanbul, Bosphorus, Wuhan china, Agazarian splash On occaision I'll use my Paiste 14" 502 bronze hi-hats and my trusty 21" Zildian Ping ride.

Istanbul and Bosphorus make GREAT sounding, great feeling cymbals.

I have yet to find any ride cymbal that will work with nearly everything I do as I have found in the Ping.... I've had that cymbal for 25 years at least.

I use a Sabian HXX 16 inch crash, and a AA crash 16 inch, and a Sabian a studio crash 18 inch. And I use a 22 inch medium Zild ride on my left and a 20 inch Zild ride on my right, don't use the right ride much anymore at all, because I have become a left hand lead player, but I still keep it over there just in case. Oh except when I go trad grip, I switch back to the right. And I have a 18 inch Sabian china, and a 16 inch Zild china, and a 12 inch Zild china. And 2, 12 inch Zild hi hats.

Been in the market for some hats, so it's interesting reading what y'all are using. Been thinking about 13", but I don't like that number. Would love to try some 14" Constantinoples or something else dark. Was impressed with some 13" Sabians a while back . . . think they were fusions.

My pies:
1980s Paiste:
RUDE hats (white print) 14"
RUDE 1000 Crash/Ride 20"
(for those of you who haven't tried these unlathed cymbals prized by heavy-hitters, check'em out)

Zildjian K Dark Crash 18"

Zilco splash 10" I think . . . it's paper thin, wobbly 1930s. I think that Zildjian Canadian factory became Sabian.

Woof,

It's all in what you're looking for, obviously. 13's are used by a quite a few funk players. I believe Dennis Chambers used 13's on his DCI videos. I have a set of 13's, nice and tight but they don't project very well. What does seem to be really nice though are the 13's with the ridged bottom. Tight, bright and crisp with very nice projection.

Keith, I remember having a Zilco cymbal in my early teens.
Funny you should mention that brand.

Zilco made some good stuff, Woodman. Don, 13" hats must be used by a lot of funk players for good reason, not just sound but playability. Look at Spanky using 12". I just discovered John Bonham used 15" with the ridged bottom (Paiste 2002). I think I'll stick with 14", pun intended.

Don't buy into that silly superstitious about 13 ahhhhmy house is falling !! It's caving in on meee!! help call a doctor my leg is across the room.

Come now, I'm okay! i said 13 thur-teen. nothing happened bad.

How do these macabre 15th century superstitions invade our psyches.

13 " hi hats are higher pitched with a nice cutting voice for jazz and instrumental music where the drums can come out of their shell. That's my inclination.
14s" a little more for backing up the groove I think . Groove based.
hey how about a remote hi hat and have both. Now that is kind of cool have 2 hats on both sides of the kit and experiment with playing them together!

Ahh there's a 13 " spider he's got my neck in his webstrings ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
