Smokin' Video of Manic Depression with Ted

For those of you who have viewed the last few videos, you know that I've been sitting in to play a few numbers with my friends at Paddy Doherty's in the Bronx with Tim Curtin & Friends. Well this past Thursday 3/4 I was the drummer for the whole gig. It featured Tim Curtin on guitar and vocals, Eddie Denise on bass and vocals, Mark Hitt [ yeah, that loud guy ! } on guitar and myself.

this is our version of Jimi's Manic Depression featuring Mark. Spanky, I know you're a big Jimi fan so I hope you will watch this !

I really had the most fun I've had at a gig in a long time. Everyone was making jokes all night and the vibe was ON ! You all know what I mean when you have "one of those nights". this was one for me !

I tried to make the download time less by using medium quality on the transfer, but it didn't look good to me so I went back again to the high quality. I'm sorry that it takes about 7 minutes to download, depending on your provider. I might try to use Flash [ FLV} in the future BUT not everyone has Adobe so that might preclude some from watching it, which I don't want to do. so that's why I use windows Media [ WMV] since most everyone has that.

You know, sometimes we get so wrapped up in doing what we're supposed to do that we often lose track of how much fun we should be having when we do it. It looked and sounded like you guys were having a BALL, brother T. No doubt that has a contagious effect on the audience! The guitar player was rockin! And he didn't kill the vocalist this time.

Way to drive the band, Teddy B. You have fast hands too, dude! I also heard your double pedal work on the end finale coupe-de-grasse.

Yes, we were having a blast up there cracking jokes. Because of the Dashiki I was wearing, Tim kept referring to me as "Mandingo" all night ! LOL

And yes, Don that was the debut of the Pearl Demon Drive. It's a great pedal. My one problem is that the left foot extension pedal has such a wide floor piece that I couldn't fit my hi-hat stand next to it comfortably. But thanks to Russ coming to my rescue in our phone conversation this weekend, I now know that you can buy a stand with legs that swivel, Or as I found with just two legs. Shows you how long it's been since I bought a hi-hat stand. LOL thank you Russ ! And for turning me on to Dale's drum shop as well ! I will be ordering a new one this week.


Look for another video in a totally different style from the same gig, which was a one-off if I didn't say so before.

Great to see and hear, Ted; a nice window into your life. Nice playing; you all held it down and sliced it up when necessary. The song has always been a favorite for me, not so much for lyrical content as for melody and rhythm. I think it's one of the more distinctive Hendrix tunes. But the lyrical content is really important stuff and I'd like to comment . . . Jimi did a nice job with the lyrics conveying sense of duality and ambivalence. It's interesting to note the word ambivalence was coined by the same psychologist who invented the terms autism and schizophrenia.

When this song was released in 1967, not so much was known about the cause of manic depression, now known as bipolar disorder. Some people theorize bipolar does not even exist as a single illness, but is part of the spectrum of illness from Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) to autism and all the way to schizophrenia.

I think they're all connected and for the most part may actually be of biological cause, not so much heredity as commonly thought. More and more evidence is mounting about environmental pollutants as cause of mental illness including chemical toxins and biological parasites. In the Third World, chemical toxins wreak havoc causing autism. And then, even more scary, are the bacterial, fungal and protozoal parasites causing brain damage. Diet is a factor in the case of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's where plaque forms in the brain because the body is overloaded with sugar. Enzymes can't break it down fast enough. And then something as simple as the domestic cat carrying toxoplasma is said to be directly related to the rise in schizophrenia when cats became popular pets in the 1860s. And then all the problems with water-based sewage causing brain cancer . . .

It's all related. Environmental pollution is not just about charismatic megafauna of dolphins and big trees. It's about our emotional health as much as anything. That's something Jimi didn't know about . . . and we're all just now learning about it.

Very observant Woody ! Yes the men's room is to the left of the screen which is where all the people walking past are going. It's a small bar, and I'm sure you guys have all had similar experiences.

Tim calls i t the Control Room ........ and says they're running Pro Stools in there ! Every musician in the place that hasn't heard the joke before usually falls on the floor with that one. And the non-musicians are going " what's he talking about ? " LOL.


And Don I'm thinking of growing a mullet so I can emulate you ! LOL
