Gary Husband

Hello drummer guys and gals.

Well, I'll keep this kind of short, because the real reading matter is provided by way of the following links.

My story is that to follow many, multi months of lumbar back area prolapsed disc problems I developed (a now five-month) condition of severe extensor tendinosis in my left elbow - pretty much 24-hour exreme pain and discomfort.. and to play drums.. yep you guessed it, near agony.

By the way that's tendinOSIS - a degenerative condition related to the issues of RSI and extreme or over-use of certain muscle groups. (Tendonitis by the way is the inflamation condition version.)

As the result of much research and online investigation, today, (and out of real fear I would not be able to make a six-week work spell period I have coming up) I sought the help of a Active Release Technique specialist here in the UK, situated at The Back Pain Clinic in London - http://www.thecitybpc.com/active-release-techniques.html. Well, I can tell you with absolutely no exaggeration that I experienced the first true and significant relief in six or so months of constant pain as a result of my first, initial (ten minute!) treatment.
What's more is that I have been assured I will be able to make my whole six-week tour period, and play pain-free following a further mere five more of these ten minute treatments.

My euphoria encouraged me to spread the word to all those who suffer with this kind of physical misery. I wholeheartedly recommend all here with trouble of this kind to seek out some Active Release therapy practitioners near you right away! (I have read a great deal about it, as this and Graston Technique seem relatively new developements).

Take a look at an article published online from the Berklee College of Music in Boston website.

www.berklee.edu/bt/142/overuse_injuries.html+tendonosis+drummer&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=5&gl=uk&ie=UTF-8" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://209.85.135.104/search?q=cache:vmHlDk-1A9IJ:www.berklee.edu/bt/142/overuse_injuries.html+tendonosis+drummer&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=5&gl=uk&ie=UTF-8

Secondly, just a little other promo..

My DVD ("Gary Husband's Force Majeure Live At The Queen Elizabeth Hall, London") may be
discontinued - deleted / over and out - but, we have been in the process of uploading many high points of the group's performance (of 2004) onstage in London (from Steve Bingle's incredible footage) on Youtube.

Online already are the following, which I very much hope a few of you might enjoy.

Hi Gary,

Great that you were able to find us here on Pete's site. I'm saddened to hear of your tendonosis, but very glad to hear you found some help to combat the pain. And I think that it's wonderful of you to spread the word here to your fellow drummers about the solution. The Berklee article was great to read , but the first link didn't work, at least for me.

I assume that you still have the back problem, though, which we discussed when I met you at Town Hall during the 4th Dimension Tour. If you recall, I have back and neck pain too, sustained from injuries at work over my 30 years in construction. Those problems still exist for me, and I get some relief from physical therapy, trigger point injections, and electrical stim. However, those are only temporary solutions - surgery being the final choice, which I prefer to avoid.

There is a machine now which does traction on the spine to de-compress the pressure on the discs if they are pinching the nerve. This helps some people, but everyone is different.

You said the tendonosis affected your drumming. How about your piano playing ? Just curious . Also sad to read they are discontinuing Force Majeure. Fortunately, I have my copy of this great DVD set, so I won't be left out. So to all the rest of you, this is another reason to buy things when an artist puts them out, because the way things are going, there will soon be no product left. Just try and find some of Boomer's older stuff now. You can't .

wish you continued recovery Gary . Looking forward to seeing you or hearing you on the Shulgin's songbook release when that comes out. Billy told me you played on like 5 tracks ? Would love to hear about that , too. And hope you make it to New York in the near future ! all the best, TED

I think he added a period after his first link, Ted.
Try this.

Good to hear that it is working for you, Gary.
Nothing worse than a stick in the eye, or a back pain.

Sorry to hear of your physical problems, G. But it's great to read that you have discovered some relief.

So why is the Force Majeure dvd being discontinued?

All the best,

D.

Hi D,

Thanks.

The F Majeure DVD was actually discontinued a while ago. The guy just didn't do his homework, had no idea how to sell it or market it, lost a heap full of money on it and eventually pulled the plug.. I imagine - because I was never offered an explanation. All I know is one day it was there and the next it was gone. No contact (that I know of) is achievable any longer for the guy who made it. Website went, everything.

No big news in this day and age in our field. Only the last week two of my older albums were deleted. What to say!

Hope you're well and all is cool.

G

My prayers go out to you, Gary, for a speedy recovery.

I too suffer back and neck problems, so I can unfortunately relate.

I am going to try to find someone in my area, that does the therapy that you describe. I'll post the results when I do.

Gary,

WOW! I had no idea! Well, let me
tell you that I have total reality on
being debilitated to that degree,
back in 2000, having lost 80% of
the use of my right arm. I could
not turn a key or lift a glass of
liquid. It was horrible BUT there
was a silver lining.

It was Billy that suggested, at
the time (not being able to use
my right arm at all), to focus on
my left arm and hand, reminding
me that I always wanted to do it
and now, I really had nothing to
lose and only gain and so I did
and now, I am open-handed but
after having found successful
treatments, with an OMD and
a Chiropractor. I also used
electro-stimulation, even as
I played, a few times.

Back to your experience, I am
glad things are working out for
you, on this and I am intrigued
and will follow up on your sug-
gestions related.

My situation is one, unfortunately,
that is partially genetic and I just
have to stay on top of it, switch-
ing grips constantly, matched to
trad-left and then matched to
trad-right. I just play until I
feel some pain and switch. I
have gotten used to it.

I write 5000-6000 words a day,
as an economist and so, am at
the keyboard all the time. It is
not the best, ergonomically but
I have lots of keyboards.

Thanks for sharing. You are not
only a great drummer but a
great guy. Thanks, so much!!

Regards,

I'm sorry to read this about your dvd, G. But I know that you will move forward regardless.

As to your back pain, one of the things that I have done is to go out and purchase one of those inverted tables that flip you upside down. This does wnders for relieving pressure on the vertebrae. I went to a store that specializes in furniture that supports the back and they wanted $700.00 for this thing. I went to my local sporting goods store and found one for about $250.00. Well worth looking into. it's helped me immensely.

Hey Gary:
Great to read that you are recovering in the positive. By the way, the Shulgin song book interpretations are wonderful. Smile Boomer
