Hello all,'
Had an incredible night of fusion last night when I attended the Mike Stern band show at Iridium with Mr. Fusion of Audiophile Imports , Mike Kermisch.
We had great seats and stayed for both sets. Each set was completely different as far as songs went. Set one lasted about an hour and a half, and the late set ran almost two hours. This is not the norm here where sets usually run about 70 minutes or so, so you know the musicians and audience were having a good time !
As far as song titles I only got three of them because I'm not that familiar with Stern's material. Set one opened with Tumble Home which was a 35 minute high-tempo, balls to the wall fusion ass-kicker ! Each member got a solo and Stern must have soloed for a good 15 minutes. That was followed by K T from his album Who Let out the Cats. Set two contained the song Slow Change.
The band members were Mike Stern on guitar, Dennis Chambers on drums, Kenny Garrett on sax and Tom Kennedy on 5 string bass.
Every member proved they were masters of their instruments. There was no weak link in this band at all, they were that good ! Dennis chambers was like a human cyclone and brought the crowd to a frenzy several times with his soloing. he was also messing with the band the whole night by playing in front of, behind, half-time, double-time, and whatever-time with the tempos while the band was comping behind his solos. You could see everyone counting to keep their time while Dennis would be grinning Knowing he was making them have to think really hard to figure out where he was.
I got to meet everyone in the band except for Tom, and all were very gracious to me. The great trumpeter Randy Brecker was also in attendance for the first set, along with Susan Brecker, Mike Brecker's widow.
I'm going to post some photos. Hope they show up, as sometimes I have bad luck .
An amazing night which definitely warmed things up around here ! Peace, TED
