House party / Nils Landgren Funk Unit... A funky band of Swedes. These cats even sing with soul!

I think this one is with Ray Parker Jr.

Here's a slammin instrumental they did with Maceo Parker. "simple Life."

I dunno, D, not to bring race into this, but seems a bit sterile to me. They need to mess it up more. It's pretty, but it ain't dirty.

Now here's a rhythm section with the Thin White Duke in front:

Bowie worked with these guys for several records. Drummer, Dennis Davis, is an unsung hero. Here's his discography:

(includes Hotter Than July)

Our local NPR jazz DJ has been playing a lot of Maceo Parker's newest "Roots & Grooves" and that's got some German white boys kickin' ass (WDR Big Band along with Dennis Chambers).

Nils Landgren is quite big in Europe. I have seen him live several times and our conservatory back home Big Band once played a few gigs with him.
Although I like Nils Landgren's music, I agree with Woof that I also could handle some more dirt in there!

Again, I must disagree. a crucial part of playing funk is as much about what you don't play as what you do play. You can't force the funk.... These guys played some funky smooth old school and they simply let it ride.

Remember, playing a funk groove and playing it funky is entirely two different things.

That's a bit difficult for many to grasp, but it is absolutely true.

Whataya say J. Swell? afro

This arrangement of "Don't let me be lonely tonight" is too cold! The legendary Michael Brecker only adds to this wonderful rendition.

JSwell!?
That's nifty Nephew Don!
So is that my moniker now!?
I like it!

I speak from a drummer's perspective with appreciation for the melodic/chord progressions:

Funk music is never dated as suggested earlier... especially with the YouTube offering.
Funk music relies upon an downbeat emphasis that incites involvement and participation...
... well beyond the "tapping" of feet."
... ya just got to get out of your "seat!"

To confuse funk with "filling" up the gaps to make it "dirty" is like
Taking sugar and putting "salt" on it.
Nice for some dishes,
but not for Funk!

That's what I've got to say...
Ya either have it, OR
Ya don't.

It's all in the eating, AND
... digesting.

... and guess what?!
It never leaves ya or causes
colon cancer!
Shocked

Cool

That's why over at 31 Flavors they make chocolate, vanilla AND strawberry. If you like this brand of smooth funk, that's cool by me . . . if you can hear the essence, then I'm sure there's something to learn from it and enjoy. I can enjoy it, too, but it just doesn't cut it for me. And if there's anything I know about Don, he likes his music pristine and perfect; even walked out on Buddy Guy when he heard slop. I admire perfectionists. And that's why I thought Don and Suss would enjoy this wonderful take of the Deep Purple classic:

I thought Pat brilliantly portrayed a Swede in the movie Journey To The Center Of The Earth. Or was he a Scot? Same thing. afro

But seriously, I need to check out more of the funk of Galactic:

Saw them once in 2003 and loved it. Stanton Moore is one of the best . . .

Yep, I walked out on Buddy Guy.... But it wasn't because he wasn't bluesy! The man knows the blues, absolutely. I just didn't like the way he presented it. Hey, I can appreciate a little stank in my funk, but you don't have to have it to be funky... Whether these Swedish players cut if for anyone or not, it makes them no less funky. But judging from the clips Woofus posted, he certainly know more about the subject than I do. Kinda like this add I once saw: "Beer! Helping white guys dance (and making Pat Boone sound funky) for 40 years."

"Galactic" Perfect example of playing the funk minus the funk. You know, Woof, you could have at least posted the clip where Pat sang with em. rabbit

Late!

D, I agree, you know the genre better than I inside and out . . . just saying what I like. I never have added much funk to my collection and would love the opportunity to play it with a band. However, I've been fortunate to have seen James Brown four times and one of my top two Cobham records is A Funky Thide of Sings. So, I'm not quite as dumb as I look. My other favorite Cobham record is that one with Burl Ives.

Ooh, ooh! I remember that one! That's the record where just before playing on it, Burl slipped Billy one of those secret ingrediant, dancing/funk playing beers! You know, the same brand that you, Galactic and Pat Boone drink. drunken

I should be more careful what I ask for . . . just got a Thursday night gig playing funk. My poor ears! I refuse to wear earplugs. Maybe I'll play the funky brushes some of the time . . . or maybe I'll just have a beer. Hooray beer!
