I did not know that Bernard Perdie is the most recorded drummer in history.

Hi Spanky,
i thought it was Harvey "the Maze" Mason or Steve Gadd...Bernard Purdie is one of my favourite too!Peace,Stef

I know that "Pretty Perdie" has done a lot of recordings but I would have never guessed this either, Stephane.

Loved the rhythm finger work interlaced in the beat.... I've never seen that before....
These are the kinds of things you learn when you watch the masters.

According to John "J.R." Robinson he is the most recorded drummer in the world.

I'd like to know exactly what criteria they are using to arrive at that supposition. Recorded as in sessions played ? Recorded AND credited. Recorded and not credited ? What ?

And have they forgotten about Hal Blaine from the Wrecking Crew who played uncredited on hundreds of albums.

And let's not forget Boomer who has also played on hundreds of CREDITED albums. I doubt Mr. Purdie has played on as many Credited albums as Boomer.

Just my .02

That was fun to watch, thanks, Spanky... But I do hope that
Pretty Perdie isn't taking credit for inventing the ghost note.

I will admit though, the first time I heard the hi hat lick was
on a live album of Eddie Harris' and then with Aretha Franklin
on "Rock steady". B.P. was the drummer on both of those.

Hey Spanky !

I went to mr. purdie's site and checked out his discography. Hardly 4000 recordings . I found one bit of misinformation right off the bat. He lists himself as playing drums on Bitches Brew . Well , this was news to me so I went and got out my album version and the re-release box set with the complete sessions on it. Mr. Purdie is not listed , as I knew he wouldn't be.

I'm willing to bet there's some more misinformation there if I take the time to do some checking.

No disrespect to Bernard Purdie who is an excellent drummer and has certainly played on many, many recordings - just not as many as he purports ! He has proclaimed himself as " the worlds most recorded drummer". Pure publicity.

But I ain't buyin it ! LOL

Well, Ted, without taking anything away from B.P. It sounds a bit to me
like he's blowing his own horn here. Maybe it's just my interpretation, but
it seem like he's taking credit for inventing the ghost note. Again, maybe it's
just my interpretation because that would be a BOLD move and statement to
make. I came across ghost notes by first hearing them and then emulating
what I heard, not to mention that the dynamics of rudiments are based on
ghost notes.... So this sort of epiphonic 'hmmm, what if I tried this' kind of
deal sounds a little suspect to me.

Yeah Don & Ted I had never heard about Bernard being on Bitches Brew, and when he said it I said i never heard about him being on that album. Why would he make those statements if they are not true I just don't get that.

He didn't actually say those words Spanky but when I went thru the discography on the link you provided , which is his home page, it listed Bitches Bew amongst the other credits. That one jumped out at me because I know he's not on that album. Maybe he was there, I don't know, but he's not mentioned in the box set anywhere.

He's just playing the publicity game. He says what he wants and he figures no one is going to call him on it anyway.

As much as I would love to say that Bernard "pretty?" Purdie is a friend of mine, I'd be on a Steely Dan recording today if it were'nt for him bogarting the session while I was in Studio A at Sigma Sound in NYC back in the day. The man is most congenial when you meet him, but he haunted me when playing "live" in NYC as well as on the Road with the George Wein (Newport Jazz Festivals) when I was with Donny Hathaway.

Purdie always showed up with face in the place while relying upon his solid back beat. No permutations of rhythms, just basic stuff. Now Bernard plays - don't get me wrong - yet there was never any interesting stuff with more progressive performances. Never pushing the envelope determined by creative chops - just the simple stuff.

I last saw him in 2003 at Nick & Val's invitation to participate in the Special Payment Fund for those in line to receive payments. I think the credence for this fund came from how many commercially released records a person can rightfully claim and Pretty Purdie got the most from that currency.

So that begs the question: "is it how much a person gets paid for, or is it the quality of the work that might have been contributed if another person was asked the chance by the Artist [me] without the usurper showing up and taking over?" I was recording the Diana Ross album when Purdie showed up at Sigma Sound and then took my date. Go figure... most recorded (?) or most thirsty?

I still love you Purdie - I was in High School and College when listening to you. No hard feelings - send me a Money Order. No checks allowed.

Cool Exclamation

I'm glad you chimed in here, Uncle. I remember you telling me of this incident some years ago.
A very interesting and fitting observation and assesment without judgement. Though, under the
circumstances, I don't believe you'd be out of the realm of right if you did.

Funny you bring this up, Kenny.... Art Padilla, a personal friend of mine and
former member here once posted a quote from B.P. stating: "Ringo didn't play
on S**t!" How true or accurate this is I can't confirm but that's what we were
told. I'll talk to him and try to get him to log in and fill in whatever blanks there
may be.

Thanks Neph! Actually when seeing Purdie in 2003, he and I looked at each other and just hugged. No malice. I told the fella that he robbed me of the opportunity because Fagin himself came to me and said he liked what I did on Steve Winwoods 1st ablum after S.W.'s hiatus since Traffic. And that was in England.

I don't hold grudges. My problem is maybe I should - I might be more successful! Question

... tried to phone you earlier today Don. You were out. I'll try again.

God Bless you ALL, my friends in this community. You know who you are.

Having been at Shea Stadium in Flushing Meadows (Queens Borough, NYC back in the day), Ringo definitely played that venue. As to the recordings (like handwriting), I believe Ringo recorded everything. Now Purdie might have shown up at some point many years later, since Aretha Franklin was his fanfare; but Ringo was the Beatles' drummer. I saw it. Listen to the music... it's a fingerprint: all Ringo's. Purdie doesn't play like Ringo anymore than I play like Ginger Baker.

Respectfully,

Respectfully,

One of the pains of purpose is when people (by rumors) keep redefining history. Simply mispelling a name can prevent a person from being paid. It's better to enforce these young folks (and old farts) running record companies when the legacies are denied. Next thing you know, the creators are in the headlines behind an unforseen demise, while the money pockets are in line at the bank.

Technology has far out paced our capability to keep up with it. Need I say more. So it is with music: fickle folks who don't like rap because of the "gangsta" versions; classical folks who can't improvise a lick unless its written out for them; hearts who can't receive a blasted thing because they are hardened, calloused and seared. And the wounds keep on coming from one generation to the next! Rolling Eyes

Just be real and play what is pleasurable to you and within your capability. Otherwise, please understand that what you might not like (or not prefer) is another person's treasure trove. As to Ringo and the Beatles (?)... he played it. What I don't like is how Paul McCartney took offense at Micheal Jackson purchasing the catalog. Now Michael is gone... who get's the money now: better yet, why have a broken relationship between Paul and Michael when the open market embraced all comers.

See my point? study It's not about the money when it comes to the artful expressions... but do be savvy these days. I wish I was more so when coming up with a snotty nose and green moss growing behind my ears.

scratch lol!

Believe me... I'm over it and better because of it.
