A few days ago rarebit posted the 1993 series of Max Roach interviews conducted in Chicago released last month on youtube. In the first few minutes Max mentions drummer Ike Day who lived a tragic life, but was sought out by Max and others when visiting Chicago.
This prompted me to find the following history:

Chess Records was born out of The Aristocrat label in my hometown of Chicago. It's especially interesting to learn about Muddy Waters' early days on Aristocrat along with his partner, Sunnyland Slim who I used to see play solo all the time in the 70s/80s, but didn't know he was Muddy's partner. Gene Ammons was on Aristocrat and so were lots of forgotten artists.
The description of Ike Day is only one of two I've found on the net. Find it on the link above along with photos of Day.

A word seems called for about Ike Day, the drummer on the Al Benson sides. Isaac Day, Jr., was born in Harvey, Illinois, probably in 1927. He was playing professionally in 1943, at the age of 16. Alvin Fielder has described Day as an advanced Swing drummer who developed polyrhythms independently of Max Roach and over a decade before Elvin Jones.
