ELP have now agreed to reunite for one show this summer in England,
headlining the High Voltage Festival on July 25th 2010.

http://www.highvoltagefestival.com/line-up/full-artist-line-up/

Also, Greg Lake and Keith Emerson are doing acoustic shows as a duo starting
in April in the U.S.

That is good news, but not for us in the states. A tour with all 3 in the states would be nice and they sure would be richer. I would love to see Carl live.

Hi,

I will have a chance to see Carl Palmer live for the first time on the 21st of April with the band Asia in its original line-up (Carl Palmer, Steve Howe, John Wetton and Geoff Downes). Some of you probably saw Carl Palmer live in the 70's with ELP?

Asia's new cd will be released next month and it's suppose to be a return to the style of their first album back in 1982.

Yeah, I was one of the fortunate ones having seen ELP starting with their first tour and many subsequent ones . AS a trio, with a 100 piece orchestra, indoors, outdoors, Pocono Music Festival. Then the later reunion tour and Emerson at Moogfest.

Prog Heaven. My sister painted Tarkus on my dungaree jacket. I still have it, though I can't fit in it anymore ! lol!

Also have seen Asia in their first tour. They were disappointing in that they sounded exactly like the record. Note perfect. Which is a feat in itself, but when I went I was expecting those guys to stretch it out a bit. I mean being a big Yes, ELp and Crimson fan I figured there would be some improvising . NADA

However, I have the DVD of their reunion tour from a couple years ago and they have added tunes from each of their past bands like court of the Crimson King, Fanfare for the Common Man, and Roundabout and Video Killed the Radio Star which they play fairly well. Just don't expect any big solos, though Carl usually does one where he doffs his shirt [some things never change }.

Let us know what you think of the show Anders.

Guy's I want to see Emerson, Lake & Palmer, because I have never seen them, but I have been a fan of theirs from the beginning, and they had 1 album that I did not like, and that was, Brain Salad Surgery, but maybe if I listen to it now that I am older I might like it.

fuzit

Yeah Spank. Your brain might have a little more salad in it now... lol!

As for me, I have a date with Mike Stern and Dave Weckl at Blues Alley here in DC on 4/3. (My birthday)

You are right, my brain is a salad stew now, and has been for years thanks to LSD, lol. There was another album that I bought and hated, and that was Jethro Tull's A Passion Play. Now I am a big Tull fan, but I hated that album. The good thing is unlike ELP, I did get to see Tull live around 1972 or 73.

Gotta disagree on that one Spank about Passion Play, though if you don't like, then you don't like it. that's cool.

I'm also a very big Tull fan. Have seen them about 14 times starting with the Benefit tour in 1970. In fact I have tickets to see them and Procol harum this summer. There is a chance I can get backstage - the one person I would love to meet is Ian Anderson! In all truth , he is probably the best all-around rock performer I have ever seen. His voice is not what it was, but the rest of the package is still strong as ever ! His writing ability and the way he turns a phrase are second to none.

I missed the Passion Play tour because that's when I went in the service and was sent overseas. My least favorite Tull album would have to be Under Wraps, though I did see that tour.

I had front row center seats to see him once at the Felt Forum/Paramount/Theatre @ Madison Sq. Garden [It's had a lot of name changes]. The seats actually said 3rd row but when we got there due to the stage jutting out the way it did, there was no one in front of us. And I mean Ian was leaning on the monitors right in my face !!! What a night that was !

And just 2 years ago I saw him at Carnegie Hall with classical violinist Lucia Miccarelli and they performed Kashmir by Led Zeppelin ! Can you believe it ? It was fantastic , too !

I was just laughing to myself about the version of " Teacher" that I played with my very first band back in 1970 called " Epitaph", which I have said before was named after the King Crimson tune of same. We were terrible, but everyone is at one time ! hahahahahahahaha

I think I've seen almost all the Tull drummers too: Clive Bunker, Barriemore Barlow, Gerry Conway, Mark Craney, and Doane Perry.

I never saw Paul Burgess who toured with them a bit in the early 80's.

Great memories !

Ted I think I will give Passion Play another try, I went out and got that album when it first came out, but I will listen to it again. The one Tull album that I still play a lot is Thick As A Brick, love that album to death, and of course Auqalung. Yes Procul Harum, I have been a fan of there's since 72, I only had one album by them and that was Procol Harum Live with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. I love Robin Thrower he is what drew me to them, I played that album to death. Salty Dog was nice.

I've only seen Procol twice . Once in the 70's and then the reunion tour for the Prodigal Stanger in the early 90's . Also seen Gary Brooker with Ringo and Trower solo a couple of times. Did you hear my friend Tim and I do Day of the Eagle in my basement studio ? I can give you a link if you want to hear it. It's supposed to be put on the next Beyond the Pale release, which is the Procol fan club project. The members copy procol songs and solo efforts by band members and they are put in a compilation double-CD with the proceed helping the support the fan club . Here's the link:

www.drumminfool.com/recent/Day of the Eagle final.mp3 ----------copy and past whole link please !

funny you love thick as a Brick. Me too. IN fact, we played an abbreviated version of it at the same gig I've been posting vids of and went into Skating Away on the Thin Ice of the new Day as well. I did some mallet stuff as It was mostly Tim . Again, we had never played together before as a unit so we had nothing worked it. I guess I should post that too ! LOL

But first I will put up the Beatle vid. then the Tull copy. Have to do some tranferring and uploading ! Please watch when I do get it up there !

Ok thanks Ted, I will be on the lookout. That link up there could not be found though.

thanks Spanky. It;s there but you have to paste the whole link . The reason is because the title has spaces in it and it won't put the whole link up to click on. So copy all the way to mp3 and paste that. thanks !

Beatle link is up !

Oh yeah, we also played Lucky Man too at that gig. tim does the Emerson synth solo on guitar. Guess I'll hav eto put that one up too ?LOL

Some of it was untouchable!

Hi,

I’m a huge fan of Jethro Tull also. My favourite albums are Thick As A Brick, Stand Up, Heavy Horses, Burstin’ Out Live and A, which not too many Tull fans may like. Yes, Barriemore Barlow was as Ian Anderson once put it “the inventive powerhouse”. Here is some interesting info about Jethro Tull. If you scroll down, you see ratings of each album. The highest rating was given Thick As a Brick (4.63 by 618 people), Aqualung is second (4.30).

http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=418

A few months ago I got lucky. Amazon.com had some of Jethro Tull’s albums as mini LP-cd reissues for about $12. I bought Stand Up, Aqualung, Thick As A Brick, Bursting Out Live and Stormwatch. These Japanese releases sound great and the artwork has been restored to the original cardboard sleeve. Now this issue is no longer available and it’s probably much more expensive if you do find it somewhere else.

Kind regards,
Anders

I also was a fan of Jethro. I especially liked that drum pattern on 'Nothing comes Easy.' In fact, the pattern comes up automatically on particular songs I play even now.

that track is off the second album Rac and is called Nothing IS easy , and features Clive Bunker on the drums. Yes, a very tasty drum part !

Thanks Ted for the correction.

It's only been at least one hundred years since I last played that song Wink

I never played that one with a band, but I did play the song Teacher from the Benefit album with my first band. I even have a recording of it, too but it's not pretty ! LOL

The track "Nothing Is Easy" is from Jethro Tull's second album "Stand Up". I'm sure both of you Rac and Ted handle those Bunker's drum fills at the end well, I don't (at least not fluently) Very Happy

Here is some live footage of the track in question from 1970:
