Went to the opening night of the Happy Together 2011 tour last night and as usual, was not disappointed ! It featured 5 acts from the sixties playing music that is very dear to me. I love fusion also, but there has always been something about those classic pop songs from my early radio listening days that has stuck with me. It's just well -crafted music with excellent vocals .

Opening was the Buckinghams playing their big hits Don't You Care, Susan , Mercy Mercy Mercy, Hey Baby They're Playin Our Song, and Kind of a Drag .

Next up was the Grass Roots . Unfortunately the one original member, Rob Grill, was in the hospital so the newer members carried on without him and Played the songs as best they could. It sounded fine as they played the hits, Two Divided by Love, Let's Live For Today, Sooner or Later, Wait a Million Years, Temptation Eyes, and Midnight Confessions .

The Third act was The Association , the first pro band I ever saw live , back in 1967. I was especially excited to see them again, and they had 3 of the original members present. Opening with Windy and then into their other major hits like Cherish, Everything that Touches You, Along Comes Mary , and the second most played song in history Never My Love it was as if time stood still. BTW the most played song in history is You''ve Lost that Lovin Feeling and # 3 is Yesterday.

The acts shifted quickly because it was the same backing band for each of the acts - drummer, Keys, bass and guitar and they also did backing vocals. So it was a very full sound for everyone. The drummer was steve Murphy and the Guitarist was Godfrey Townshend.

After a short intermission out came Mark Lindsay, the lead singer from Paul Revere & the Raiders and then a successful solo career. He was still in good voice and rocked out opening with Just Like Me, then the theme from Where the Action Is TV show, followed by Hungry, Arizona, into Good Thing, Indian Reservation (Cherokee People ), and ending with Kicks !

Then came the stars of the night The Turtles featuring Flo & Eddie, a very favorite band of mine. They always have a surprise entrance and tonite they both came out dressed as Lady Gaga while the band played one of her songs. My daughter got a big kick out of that as she is a Gaga fan.

The Turtles did there usual hits, You Baby, It Ain't me Babe, Eleanor, You Showed Me, She'd Rather Be With Me, and of course Happy Together . And some comedy bits, as always . They even did a short bit of Peaches en Regalia reflecting on their time with Frank Zappa. They will be touring next year as part of Zappa plays Zappa doing Frank's music, they announced.

A magical night and to top it off, there was a surprise meet and greet with some of the band members after the show. I will post some photos my daughter took with her camera phone. I didn't bring my camera as I didn't expect to meet anyone. So how nice was that ? I had a blast. the tour just started so I'd recommend it to anyone if it comes out your way !

A riotous and beautiful post, Ted, especially the pic with Flo. Would love to see them with ZPZ. Maybe I'll get up to Melbourne to see this next week. On a poignant note, lead singer of The Grass Roots just passed: http://www.examiner.com/vintage-rock-n-roll-in-national/lead-singer-of-60s-rock-group-the-grass-roots-dies-at-67

Here's the original they covered so well:
