I went to the music store in a rush as i had to replace a head within a half an hour till show time. he handed me an aquarian for 12 bucks so I took it. I'm thinking i just wanted a remo ambassador but I'd had good luck with aquarians in the past and was out of time like down to the wire. iidrove home grabbed the snare and took the ripped head off and popped the new one on, drove to the gig and had 10 minutes to spare. the head sounded great on my aluminum ludwig concert snare. i'm going to try aquarians out on my new drumset and see how it goes. I'll have to see if they have something similar to a pinstripe if not i may go with remo pinstripes. I'm off to play seattle for the weekend. http://www.nwfolklife.org/

always for the kick.

I've had an Aquarian Super Kick on my BD for the past 2 years, and going strong still. It has a way of holding a lot of lower-end sound and thats why I prefer that on a BD over all else. Very durable as well.

I bought a set of evans ec2 coated heads for my toms. i'm pretty happy with them so far in a rock setting but haven't really been able try them in any other situations.

I used to use Aquarians on my kick. They're not bad by any means. A bit too sound confining for me, though, especially the the heads for the snare and toms. For me it's about the drum as a whole, the shell, the hoops, mounting system and the heads. investing in a set of nice shells and then killing their projection potential by putting on resonant killing heads totally defeats the purpose for me.

That makes alot of sense D. I wouldn't like it if i were playing jazz. i use a whole different set of drums for that with an 18 " kick with a totally open sound. the aquarian super kick II is good for funk or stuff that needs a solid bottom end. It is no maintenance. It's easy and does the job for those kinds of gigs and seem to last forever. I really like what you are saying here about the sound qualities being limited.

I've never had problems of that nature with the Evans' , Spanky.
But they don't seem to hold up as long as the Remos.
I have returned to Evans because they are much more consistent
during the time they do last. I'm constantly tuning the Remo heads
until they seat which takes too long for me. I'd rather deal with the
Evans' head issue.

I like clear emperors for the toms and and snare, and aquarian super kick 2 on the bass drum, powerstroke 3 on the front. The super kick 2 is so easy to get a great sound with. I haven't tried the powersonic yet.

It's so nice to see John Abraham listed on the Aquarian site. It's about time! I've had three official lessons in my life, all from John. Check him out-

I finally replaced my 18" kick drum head with a remo coated emperor.
What an improvement. They are dbl ply with the oily stuff inside.
I use this drum for jazz but mostly little ethnic music gigs in small settings.
i also lowered the bass drum beater to hit dead center and not sure that really made much difference. I put a thin beater pad on the head to avoid denting rather than one of those heavy duty ones.
Found some LP mini timbales with a mount at a yard sale for 35 bucks for a middle eastern sound. I'm psyched to try it all out this weekend on a couple gigs.
the wide open sound i could get on the bass drum won't be the same But i could switch the heads out if i want that back for some more jazzy stuff. But now i have a pretty tough little kick for those funkier moments. back to remo on that
also totally pleased with the evans ec2 coated heads for my toms on my large kit they look like a gauzy coated pinstripe seem very durable and even sounding

Aloha folks - I know it's been awhile. I've got a big project working with the USNavy on some docking port signage. It's been absorbing much of my time these days but I'm not complaining.

But on the topic; yes Evans makes the best heads in sound quality but have issues in it's durability for sure. And mind me...I'm not a heavy metal hitter yet these heads start caving when you would least expect it. I mean only three months once a week? Outside of that, they are incredible heads sound wise. If they would lower the price on them maybe It might be affordable to expect changing them frequently. lol!

The yellow dotted areas are indications of dents that's not as visible by way of a camera.

How you all doing these days?

And Pete, thanks for the hyperlinks showing whats goin on in different parts of the states. Yeah, I'm very familliar with Dragons club. I jammed a couple times there with some of those guys.

The best, in my opinion, of some real jazz happening here in Hawaii. The rest is well,,,, need I go on. But thanks for that uplift....really helpful indeed.

Much Aloha and shalom all,

rac
