The Vault is beginning to release the 1960 Newport Jazz Festival concerts just as they did several weeks ago with the unreal 1959 line-up.

Listening now to Louis Armstrong All-Stars:

Same band one year later with Duke Ellington at the piano, the historic session of 1961. No wonder it sounded so great with Duke . . . what an unbelievable treat 50 years later!

Also released is one I'll check out ASAP: Dizzy

That's Billy Kyle at the piano with Louis. I'll bet he was a bit pissed when Duke took his chair and they recorded all that great stuff in 1961. I think he's kicking ass in this 1960 concert and it's a very rare chance to hear him. Check out his wiki and learn why (they should revise it after hearing this concert; I'll bet his family is thrilled to hear him!):

Great drum solo by Danny Barcelona on Stompin' at the Savoy, track 14. I don't think Louis could get away with his introduction of Danny these days . . . I've seen him say the same thing in a youtube video re: "little Filipino boy"

In some ways, people of the past were more open than we are today.
