Check out this guys auction, He has Billy's name in the title.
He put, "Superstar drums, designed by Billy Cobham"
I am not sure that is true?
He did use them from 1978-1987, but I don't think he designed the shells and
hardware. Am I right? I know he helped design the Gong Drum and the Octobans.

If Boomer can help set the history straight, that would be great.

Billy Cobham - instrumental in the development of Superstars, as he worked closely with Tama's new product development group to develop a top quality drum. Known for his first kit - double bass in Natural Finish .

I found this tidbit online.
Billy should be able to chime in on this.

I sure miss those Tama days
Billy Cobham went out of his way to do World Clinics with Tama
and it was worth it as he got good feedback
and some cool Exposure.

One Tama Gig Bill
did was in Tower Records, Piccadilly
London W1. in 1988.

It is great to try so many things.

That Mega W1 Store is still there but now a Virgin Store.

Billy definitely put Tama on the map, he was one of the first endorsers.
Along with Stewart Copeland, Simon Phillips and Neil Peart.
I was surprised when he dropped his endorsement to go to an endless
slue of slightly inferior drums, Tempest, Mapex, ect.

Now that he is with Yamaha, he is back with high quality, Japanese drums.
I wonder what Billy thinks of the current Tama products?
Starclassic Maple/Birch & Starclassic Bubinga?

Let's not forget Lenny White's endorsments on Tama Superstars during the late seventies, maybe early to mid eighties. I'm well aware that he now plays with a different company that are very very high-end in every way. Would you, or anyone for that matter, know the name brand?

On a 'personal' note, I've owned a set of Superstars, probably post Cobham-development in the late eighties and found them to sound a bit too boxy in sound. That may have been attributed to the bearing edges of the shell's design. However, today Tama drums (mid to high end) are by far unparallel equipment to say the least. I'm still using (loving) my Tama Birch Superstars this day, five years now.

I especially love their new Cobra's two-legged high hat stands. Sooooo smooth and I feel that Tama has captured the essence of 'feel' playing them. When playing them the first night, right out of the box,.....it was fantastic!! Two arms up for Tama cheers

I believe Lenny plays Innovation drums. They are a small boutique company that makes a nice product.
