How're you uncle Suss!

I know it's been sometime now, either here or myspace, that we've not been connecting. Anyway, I'll always love your take on Conundrum. I particularly appreciate your consistency on the high hats, very notable on Torpedo Flow. There is so much theoratically happening here without doing injustice to the effective 'naturalness' that many a players have exchanged for sterilness of technique. Your playing has always incouraged respectfull and thoughtfull disecting complex pieces of music without hampering it's energetic-groove or life out of it. To me, that's magic (musical maturity) I believe has intrigued me over the years seeing you as a ture craftsman of your instrument. It really started here for me. Thank you again for your valued contributiions!

As always-all hats off to the uncle cheers cheers cheers

So nice to hear from you Glenn! Its been awhile since I've been able to monitor this among other sites and my daily responsibilities! You know what I mean, in that I'm in a different "space & time" now where music is mostly played rather than chatted about. I DO miss the conversations though among a diverse group of folks in the Boomer Community.

I'll say again that when it comes to the High Hat, that was the instrument within the kit that I was most intimidated by back in the day, namely: I heard the sounds but struggled to produce the desired effects/affects. After many years of playing so many styles of music, I've become very comfortable with however this stroke/strike/color fits into any music on demand. Actually, my secret to it all is that I use the HH to complement the other players - maintaining that drive when answered by another stroke/strike/color on something else within the kit in concert with other players. Somehow, it all comes together for anyone I've worked with.

But this is nothing new with you astute Guys! Hopefully, my personality is clear behind the kit. More importantly, hopefully you'll all experience the same freedom in expression.

Thanks Rac!... I sought to send a private message but noticed that capability has been locked. I can only read very old PMs.

Conundrum/riddle is quite simple actually. Yet "simple" is relative, depending upon who understands what is being asked.

My preparation is honed in understanding how to apply what is demanded... at least from my creative pulse.

Billy wrote a tremendous tune from his perspective. I simply applied that perspective to my own.

Yes, 18 years has not changed a thing in my world-view – just different musical partners in this dance we call Life. Aren’t we ALL blessed as drummers to be able to provide the music to anyone’s dance?

Most recently is Walter Bland (2008 – Atlanta, GA)… a guy I met only a few years ago and got to record with. Walter presents his palette with colors any drummer would schmooze with. Please lift him up in prayer because he’s got his hands into so many pots right now that he’s been out of touch. I pray that this is Good thing.

The latter part of this tune is Oliver Scott (Houston, TX)… a guy that I met back in the late 80s when Candi and I were traveling extensively. Together we (Oliver and I) co-produced his album that received major CHR (contemporary hit radio) airplay on my label within the gospel niche. Unfortunately, CHR does not sell records. Oliver, however (as one of the members of the GAP BAND), came to know his purpose in this scheme of things we call Life.

I segued these two pieces together because of the theme, meter and message. Walter’s piece is short because I suffered a computer crash last year and had to salvage saved files on a remote server. Too bad I can’t hear what we did together in entirety. In reviewing (and testing) my files, I stumbled upon this idea – to put these two tunes together via Nero’s Wave Editor.

I shift gears now…

Those who have received my gift via the postal service know what I speak about. There is no one “good” except the Father. As for the Doctor (?)… well go figure, unless we can heal ourselves.

This is All in Good News Guys. Take a listen and consider. scratch scratch scratch sunny

Peace…

Among the realities inspiring me is "community." I guess it can tell in my music. We share this among each other apart from the legal and often "refused" outcomes that each and everyone deserves on the face of this planet Earth.

All I have of value in this Mix of miasma is to be positive: ever learning about different cultures without losing myself. This is a 'principle' that does not change, while our emotions, time and circumstances often do.

Thank you for your well Wishes on this, My birthday - today. May WE ALL have many more. I'm no longer looking for what I've already found: My Angel Love.

Suss' Soundscapes - Page 2 FreeSoulRelease-DonnyHathawayMay30-2000

It's been an incredible two weeks of stuff preparing for what seems on our way in the Southeastern U.S. with hurricane season. My respite is to ponder upon things positive and up-lifting.

When in such a mood recently (and somewhat self-centered), I downloaded a track that I played with Donny Hathaway, entitled Nu-Po. Colin had mentioned this track several years ago on the old site(s), but all I could listen to was a 30 second snippet. Now I have the whole recorded track.

I often wonder where my mind was to bring about the rhythmic weaving heard. As usual, the mood on stage was creative and free - since Donny would often venture off with melodic keyboards as readily as his vocal treatments.

The personnel is Donny (keys), Gil Silva (guitar), Basie Saunders (bass), Chuggy Carter (congas) and myself on this instrumental.

All I can say is that it was fun to play. Donny did not always include this tune in the line-up. I'm glad he did that night back in 1974. If he were here today, I'm certain one of his revisitations would be to have an updated version of this tune performed with the same players. What do you think?

Love,

Suss!

Actually, my B'day was 7/17. Doyen and I had already planned to meet the day after it. It'd been awhile since out at the studio where I recorded so many times before - this time I would bring a Lady friend that I wanted them to meet as well. Perhaps my "MySpace" endorsement describes it best, when musing on that Saturday among true friends in the flesh. My motivation in sharing with you Guys is that you will clearly hear when I falter in the chops. But hopefully, you will hear where my heart is when it comes to morphing patterns into something unexpected. I've not been able to play like I'd like to over the past few months. I'm at the point where priorities take precedent over personal pursuits or passions. Yet even still, I'm so glad to be able to muster the means when called upon. Doyen simply said to me that he wanted to track some patterns to test out new microphones. The mindset of a 'producer' came out of when he then said "I want you to simply play so that I can get your sound in this room. Play to what/who is most dear to you." Well, the most dear to me is who I deem the answer to prayer. I played to a Rose, vicariously. The next thing I knew, Doyen was tracking both of us when morphing and jamming. We're absolutely LUNATIC when together in a state of the Art production studio. And forgive me if what you hear is not what you expect. It's long and musically lyrical - with suggestive lead-ins by mostly me with Doyen just giving up, slating to hard disk (because the analog tape ran out), and leaving the board when joining in. What I try to impart to younger drummers here in Atlanta (and I mean VERY young) is that a drummer's responsibility is more than just keeping TIME. A drummer/percussionit's responsibility is to BREATHE with the music so that MUSIC can flow and ebb, flow and ebb; flow and ebb. May Melodies ever punctuate what drummers project. This is my style Guys and a preferred mode of communication behind my kit, and I'm STICKIN' to it! cyclops bounce Arrow
Re: My accolades to a Great Family and Friends: The Keatons at AudioHipster, Inc.! It’s rare when technology combines with personal attention to camaraderie and detail. With correct balance, and societal/cultural motivations, the results are not just hoped for: they become a reality. Such has been my experience over the years with AudioHipster, Inc., and with Doyen and Carla Keaton in particular [Loganville, GA]. The man has Ears likened to the eyes of an Eagle. His/their hearts are bigger than Life!
It was a day after my birthday when my standing invitation to show up arrived. I already knew what to expect. Upon arrival, I was met with appetizers and the promise for what would be a splendid grilled meal later in the day. Carla is a “wiz” in the kitchen; as well as quite the business-woman. So there I was: aside the pool improving upon my natural-born tan (LOL!), and imbibing some of the best beverage found anywhere on the Planet. Now mind you… imbibing is not meant to suggest that I, or anyone else, lost control. I was just enjoying myself after a hard week’s work. Please understand my sharing… only those with ears/heart to hear/receive will benefit! My principle in Life has been to increase capacity, rather than be shut off and xenophobic. Such requires more than one color to fill a palette, let alone the textures to render to canvass. Likewise, it takes more than one box to define the Universe. Below I offer the full link to a slate that I put down to hard drive [the analog tape drive ran out before I finished]. Doyen’s encouragement was to think of something very dear to me. In my view was the freedom and liberty anyone anywhere seeks. My brush was the drum kit with the colors of the full visible and audio spectrum in mind. There is just too much out there for anyone to disregard the relationships we have among proven friends and professionals. I highly recommend AudioHipster, Inc. [Loganville, GA/USA] for the expertise that personal attention is given to detail and recording criteria. In other words, Doyen is the engineer that has slated the absolute BEST drum sound in my over 36 years of appearing on mainstream and commercial releases in the music industry. I do not make this statement lightly. Hear for yourself [oh, BTW: that’s Doyen jamming on the guitar with me after the iron-oxide [Fe2O3] ran out. http://www.johnsussewell.com/AudioHipsterDrums_John_Doyen_071809.mp3 [44.2 MB]
I just love the combination of tom tones with cymbal emphases as I approached a variety of grooves in my typically regarded lyrical fashion. The microphone array, coupled with a plate reverb on a well-tuned kit brought out every nuance. Needless to say, I had FUN that day… and still having it TODAY.
My prayer with purpose is that others reading this take it to heart… just don’t have a great day – MAKE IT A ONE UNIQUE for YOURSELF and those within your reach.
I thank you both: Doyen & Carla Keaton!
With Much Love & Appreciation!

Hey Guys… forgive me for my silence on the WTJ side of the forum. I really miss schmoozing with you folks on more serious issues as they come up. No excuse from me; just fact: I’ve been working hard daily and enjoying it. That is rare at this stage of anyone’s life, I think.

So, I just wanted to share what I’m enjoying this day off from work. The Roy Ayers experience for me, however fleeting, was monumental. I mean, I already knew the man personally from eight years before – yet never got to work with him until Sigma Sound Recording Studios (NYC). He phoned me when his drummer (Ricky Lawson) was called out of town for the scheduled sessions. I got to play on a number of them, but the above two (2) made the commercial album.

Hope you enjoy.

It is not readily apparent what or who is most evident among our lives and thos living with skin. I offer this from my experience most intimately with only one caveat: Command your peace, or take your leave. Unless you have the authority to exercise the same [exousia], then kindly bow out in the wings with a teachable/student attitude. If you don’t know, then you just don’t know. Seek the relationship that I have with the Sovereign – then you’ll know. And hell to those who reject this offering when I’m paying forward to those with “skin” as others have done for me. This is free..

I’m so glad to have spoken with Pete today… we all need someone to speak to with a spiritual Outlook and still listening to each other. So now I speak from what I have lived by for decades. This is perhaps the way I perform on the drums the way anyone should. I, by the Grace of the Father Jehovah, and His Son (my Savior), I perform on ALL of the tracks hereinafter [percussion/drums], and many more. In the Word of God by His Spirit through the Apostle Paul, I express the same sentiment and motivation…

“For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more. And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law; To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law. To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. And this I do for the gospel's sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you.” [… 1 Corinthians 9:19-23 …]

“I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.” [… Philippians 4:12, 13…]

By the way… the oil/ointment is available to anyone who submits to the discipline. When you have that balm, you will never be the same. Religion has taken the results/effect of the Word of God out of context. There is no forum for God, but there is a Lifestyle with a reality and Eternity in view. I see it. I pray for it. I love it. Will You?

Punctuated by Purpose, but disappointed by detractors, I find myself wondering what it is that has motivated my life's affection and affinity toward musical/percussive expressions.

What's more is that I wonder when some venture out of
comfort zones
[as I clearly do, and have done in my life experience], others are alienated by the perception of
"double-speak:"

You know: that conundrum of speaking out of both sides of one's mouth, instead of the listener actually hearing what is being said.

On July 18, 2009, I had the opportunity to simply sit behind a drum kit and express myself. When speaking publicly, I speak with proper grammar, syntax and punctuation - always seeking to keep in mind the audience. On this particular evening, I was asked by the engineer to simply "sit" behind the "kit" and express myself rhythmically. With only a moment of trepidation, I resolved to be myself. The proof is in the pudding...

My desire is to share with this community what I discovered about myself. May you enjoy my journey through forests, rather than among mere trees [first offered in downloadable segments, with the Full Monte following]. This journey will take you through a number of percussive genres. Maybe it will make sense to those who actually Listen, while I Learn.

Re: http://www.johnsussewell.com/Bounce&Bless-EddiePalmeiri&Suss2003.mp3 ]5MB]

Seeming as a conflict of terms (juxtaposed), I think that both “Bouncing” and “Blessing” are one in the same. The reasons for this may appear hidden; but the manifest Destiny for anyone has already been revealed. When I recorded this with Mr. Palmeiri (as an overdub Opportunity back in 2003 via Pete Corona), I recognized that the drum kit is seldom used in Latin music. Specifically, I mean that the unity [synergy] of percussion often left the full-kit drummer out. I honestly don’t know why… but when listening to the naked track back then, I both saw the Room and heard available dynamics when entering that room. Thank you Pete for our synergy! I acknowledge God’s Gift in my life.

Music is my passion, not my Purpose. I sense that the Sovereign God has ordained my life (Purpose) to be toward encouraging others to recognize their own. For me, this is the essence of Ministry/service.

Music is just one (1) of the Arrows in my Quiver: so that the interaction of us All is greater than the sum of our individual contributions and effects. From thence is my statement and application of what “synergy” means. I am circumspect and diligent not to neglect the other arrows in My Quiver. To illustrate this, I offer a Principle by which I have learned much. I trust you’ll see the synergy in application:

“And he [Jesus] spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old. And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish. But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.” [Luke 5:36 – Luke 5:38 - KJV]

“Then said he unto them, therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old. And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed thence.” [Matthew 13:52 – Matthew 13:53 - KJV]

So I [John M. Sussewell (a/k/a “Suss!”)] reinforce in my own words: “Stay nimble and Be Blessed!” Bounce those who do not (or refuse to) encourage you in this Divinely Ordained synergistic and Jazztastic Process.

I thank the Living Sovereign for His Gift of Music in my life, and am thankful that I’m a musician/psalmist, among so many credible Artforms.

Berachah! [2nd Chronicles 20:20-22; in context and application even until Today!]

Only a day after my birthday, when recording this at a local studio, I mused if any would honestly take the time to plumb depths, we’d find not only ourselves, with Someone in the Wings. When asked to improvise God’s Gift on drums relationally among “times & circumstances” confronting us ALL, I persist in doing so.

“To do” is a double infinitive that has many conjugations, yet never ending. Hence, in the Greek, its dubbed “aorist:” meaning “ongoing and without ceasing” [much like agape love]. “Segued” is an abstract of a much Greater Work for ANY with ears and heart to hear. It means to survive beyond “generational curses.”

As for me and my household, we’re on the Rock, and our names are on the Roll [Josuah 24:15]. There is NO semblance between the Son of Promise and son of the slave woman. Hence there is NO REASON for those serving the god they know to take innocent lives in terrorist acts. There’s simply no reason – and I pray for the “white throne” judgment, while not seeking to “escape” at the expense of others whose eternity has been covered by the Blood of Christ.

“ Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now. Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman. So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free. Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing. Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing. For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.” [Galatians 4:28-5:6… in the context of those written to when many at that time were perplexed with the ‘old’ versus the ‘new and refreshed’ gospel – as human-kind is NOW.]

Hence, Why is America trying to be “politically correct” when human kind is as stake among those who misapply and misappropriate the Name of YWHW? Please, never leave anyone behind while seeking our happiness and Purpose among Living – His Spirit does not allow the senseless slaughter of innocents. Jesus Christ, a Jew, gave his life for those who praise His Father [YWHW]. Anyone who seeks to approach the Father by any other means, except through His Son Jesus, is a Thief among thieves. Likewise, happiness is selfish without God’s continual impartation to our societal efforts by His Spirit toward His Kingdom. The Principle is “to sow” [and grow] more than you can EVER expect to reap [and repay]. I pray no one makes the mistake of mistaking meekness for weakness in the 21st Century. Therein is still THE fault. Your’s Truly: ScissorhandsSuss! - and me with much evidence, pain and Purpose – fulfills his ministry by taking courage to remind what has been said millennia ago. It is not with whom we perform that matters; but who we Are in cognitive exercise that we are All children in God’s Sight. Hence, I beg the question to anyone: “Who on God’s Earth would want to kill a Child – by whatever name you call God, “Father?”

I write with humility, my associates and friends. I write because I’m living this balance. May you do so also - and come out of the fire without even the smell of it.

Suss' Soundscapes - Page 2 Rock&Roll

Years ago, Billy played on a song that is still rudimental to my appreciation of what anyone does in the shadow of another. It would be pure arrogance to claim that any of us are unique, however distinctive our "signatures" may be.

Here's to Boomer (Billy) and the rest of us Lot. I'm literally on the Rock, and in the Roll!

... and that Jazztastically!

Go figure.

What often should be said, is often so redundantly repeated:

 Is it a different concentration or a present confrontation? My answer: both!
 Is it willingness or refusal? My answer: both!
 Is it fallacious or Integrity? My answer: Integrity based upon what is true and timely.
 Is it sensitive or salacious? My answer: preferably the former for its’ reasoning, rather than the latter among selfish adults.
 Is it clergy or the “common man”? My answer: Clergy more than any other have aligned themselves to political pursuits, rather than the Purpose behind our Author. I am not among the clergy… I am common and seeking to communicate with the same motivations.

These are proper questions in my thinking: given that every ‘responsible’ human being seeks to strike a balance between opposing thoughts within our own minds. My polite suggestion is that what we think ought to distill into the best behavior with BEST practices (behavior) toward others.

All I am saying is that through having the privilege to live through many tumultuous periods over the last six decades, I’ve concluded that we can only receive when we [first] give of ourselves. Of course, initial conditions are such that “ourselves” can often be confused with what others want from us, rather than our concentration (focus), willingness (a heart for it), and our personal sensitivity to others (sharing).

“Know thyself,” Socrates said. Know yourself today, is what I respectfully remind. By mine own hands (authorship & Authority) on two [different] musical instruments [piano, drums with collaborative expressions] – and ALL from Instilled motivations I’ve allowed into my heart (rather than unclear Influences so many around us seem to neglect), I offer just my perspective on things challenging us All:

By the way… these expressions from me should not be construed as “us” against “them.” That posture disenfranchises even more while it’s widely known that “Dem” just don’t know who they are - while the whole World is seeking to work together for obvious solutions. Support the Haitian effort after another “natural” disaster. Support others also in the meantime. We can only do this when acknowledging where we come from… and what our personal purpose is in the corporate scheme of things, time and space (our Opportunities]. Make your difference, while knowing “different is not better… just different.”

http://www.johnsussewell.com/Eleuthera-BillyCobhamWSuss-2003.mp3 [22.5 download - c. 2003 with my personal friend: Billy [“Boomer”] Cobham. What I Love about my performance upon the Cobham’s tune is that I morph time signatures (on the writings of others with sentences) where they make sense [without anyone cutting/interrupting anyone “off” in mid-sentence. This is me... figure out the rest with yourself and patience. This is a learned behavior, no matter what we do in Time or what we were born with.]

Be well and prosper… with So Much Love from me, myself and I.

By the way… whether its Eleuthera (Bahamas) or Anywhere… I only desire the kind of peace where wherever we go or are, we are just doing it (aorist – infinitive verb), and we are doing it toward the benefit of others…

Well Sussed & Yours Truly,

A day after my 60th birthday (July, 2009); invited to AudioHipster Recording Studios for a BBQ, fun with friends and, inevitably, some Jamming! Asked to just “play” the drum kit by whatever inspiration came to mind; and that solo. When stumped, my host (Doyen) said “play to Rose!” I began without any idea of what I’d do, but had a destination in mind: cohesiveness with cooperation; kindness with much Love. You’ll hear a conflagration of Jazz, Latin and African roots. I particularly like the African themes woven into these segues of what wound up being a full 30+ minute groove aggregation (or aggravation, depending upon one’s attitude) of cultures. Who said drums are only noise? One just has to make them speak. I thank God for my ability to make it so. BTW, that’s Doyen on guitar later in the take (he couldn’t resist leaving the console and picking up his axe). Please enjoy:
